Stephen Manford Rhodes

LAWRENCE, KS — Stephen Manford Rhodes, age 63, passed away on Friday, May 2, 2014.

Steve was born on June 29, 1950, in Newton, IA, to Samuel Manford and Shirley Sime Rhodes. Raised in Newton, IA, Steve was a 1968 graduate of Newton High School. In 1972 he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Business with an emphasis in insurance from the University of Iowa, where he was a member of Sigma Nu Fraternity.

On September 9, 1972, he married Constance (Connie) Jeanne Cray at Gloria Dei Lutheran Church in Iowa City, IA.

His passions included his children and grandchildren, fishing, golf, vegetable gardening, playing Quad City rugby, watching college basketball, and serving as an enthusiastic spectator at family sporting events. He also served on the board of the American Red Cross of Douglas County as Treasurer from 1990 to 1993.

He is survived by his loving wife, Connie; son James Manford Rhodes (Crystal) of Indian Trail, NC; daughter Laura Jeanne Rhodes Tarbell (Justin) of Hogansburg, NY; daughter Katherine Louise Rhodes Corkill (Kegan) of Dallas, TX; and eight grandchildren: Reed Manford Rhodes, Ty William Rhodes, Riley Elizabeth Rhodes, Alexander Justin Tarbell, Aaden James Tarbell, Abigail Jayne Tarbell, Ava Jeanne Tarbell, and Kinley Rhodes Corkill. Other survivors include siblings Elizabeth Rhodes Nagler (David), William Samuel Rhodes (Nancy), Sana Rhodes Zamarripa (Mark), and many aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and grandparents.

A memorial service will be held at Trinity Lutheran Church in Lawrence, KS, at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, May 7, 2014. The family will greet friends in the foyer of the church from 10:30 to 11 a.m. A family burial service will be held at Washington Cemetery in Duncombe, IA, on Thursday, May 8, 2014.

Memorials may be made to the American Red Cross Douglas County Chapter, 2518 Ridge Court, Lawrence, KS 66046 and identifying the contribution with Steve‘s name.
