Ronald “Ron” Lynn Ferguson

Memorial Services for Ronald “Ron” Lynn Ferguson, 63, Lawrence, will be held at 4:00 p.m., Friday, December 1, 2023, Warren-McElwain Mortuary in Lawrence. The family will greet friends from 3- 4 p.m. prior to the service on Friday.   Ron passed away Sunday, November 26, 2023, at his home.

Ron was born on October 26, 1960, in Lawrence, KS, the son of Donald Lynn Ferguson and Karron (June) Ferguson Schwarz.

He worked as an A&P Mechanic for Hall Industrial Services and Meade Aircraft before becoming part of the family at Sunflower Rental in Lawrence.  Ron could fix anything.  He restored homes and trucks.  He built and flew RC and Ultralight planes before selling it all to go sailing. 

He co-sailed the Northwest Passage before buying his own 30ft sailboat, Joyita.  Ron spent 3 years in the sea of Cortez and was set for Hawaii before Covid.  His final adventure was to sail the Great Loop.  Cancer cut his journey short. 

He’ll be remembered as Captain Ron to his sailing friends.  His family remember him as fiercely loyal, loving, honest and brave.   

Survivors include his mother, Karron Schwarz, Lawrence; his sister, Colleen (Ted) Walker, Lawrence, his ex-wife and best friend, Dawn Ferguson, his children, Brittany Welch (Brandon Nelson), North Newton, KS, Andrew Welch, Mt. Hope, KS, Hannah (Danny) Foiles, Carthage, MO; grandchildren, Josiah and Anorra; nieces and nephews, Sarah McIntosh, TJ Walker; great nephews Gavin McIntosh, and Brogan McIntosh.

He was preceded in death by his father, Donald, stepfather, Ken Schwarz, nephew, Ryan Walker and his beloved dog, Bella.

Memorial contributions may be made in memory of Ron to Casa Franciscana in Guaymas Mexico (A Mission where Ron volunteered).  Send in care of Warren-McElwain Mortuary, 120 W. 13th Street, Lawrence, KS 66044.

    I can see the excitement in Ron’s eyes as he explains sailing to Uncle Don as they sail the clouds of Heaven. Ron lived life fully. Prayers for the family.

    We are so sorry to hear about Ron’s passing. He was instilled with many great attributes that will never be matched! A testament to his excellent upbringing by Mom, Dad, and Ken’s endearing friendship! We can’t forget such terrific sister and brother-in-law also!

    May GOD BLESS all of YOU during this time of great sorrow. We know Ryan was there to help his bestest Uncle make the transition to Heaven a blissful one! I can only say, the Angels have their hands full with these two. Love you all!
