Condolences to Charlotte and the family,

Although job, time, distance, and the normal day to day living can attribute to friends not making regular contact. It’s special friends like Rick, who could accept and understand those barriers, and know that it didn’t matter. Because once you did make contact again, you always easily and immediately move to that special “comfort” zone, that only exist between the closest of friends. That’s very rare. Rick was that kind of friend. He was talented, a good family man…and a really good skier. Some of my fondest memories of Rick, were our ski trips together. I also consider Rick my first real mentor. He gave me my first job at the Varsity Theatre, that lead to the foundation to my lifelong 50+ year career in the movie theatre industry. I never had another job.

    You will be missed.

Charlotte, You know how I feel about you and “Ricky” as you fondly called him. The two of you were so nice to Mom and Dad after I left Lawrence…thank you so much. When Rick first hired me to work at the Varsity Theatre in downtown Lawrence, I was a cocky little 16 year old who thought he “knew it all”. When working the concession stand one evening, I was bragging about my work habits (after cleaning the popcorn machine) and mentioned something to the affect of how valuable I was as an employee. Rick looked at me and said, “You?! A monkey could do your job!” He proceeded to tell me all the things I could have done and should be doing in order to carry the moniker of “invaluable”. He did not say it in a mean way, but in a way I knew he meant it. I laughed it off of course, but upon reflection, that night when I got home, I realized he was right! From that day on I became a very good employee, for him and anyone else I worked for and I owe most of that to Rick! A funny note about this is I made the mistake of telling that story to my wife, who, whenever I don’t meet her standards of hard work, reminds me in no uncertain terms that, “A monkey could do your job!” Annnnnnnddd, she’s usually right. LOL I will cherish the memories of our parties after work, our trip to the 1971 NCAA finals to watch the Jayhawks in Houston (bad sunburn on Galveston Beach in cold overcast weather), and many more adventures highlighted with tons of laughter. Rest in Peace Rick…you lived a very good life.

    Charlotte & Family,

Please accept my heartfelt sorrow upon learning of Rick’s passing. It’s been a few years since the two of you and all the rest of us were keeping Ma Bell in business and having a good time doing it. I have many wonderful memories of Rick, and the two of you as a team. You guys were sort of the “unofficial social committee” of the 220 Bell establishment in Topeka. When you and Rick planned an event it was always fun and uplifting. I cherish those memories and I pray that you and your beautiful family will have “the peace that passeth all understanding.”

Although I wasn’t there much I always loved seeing him on my visits he was the best grandpa anyone could ask for. We will miss hearing the sound of his piano going in the background and hearing about all of his storys of life. He surly will be missed and remembered in all of our hearts and souls forever.
