Rebecca “Becky” Lizabeth Castro

Funeral services for Rebecca “Becky” Lizabeth (Walker) Castro, 68, Lawrence will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, June 14, 2014 at First Christian Church in Lawrence. Burial will follow at Mt. Olivet Cemetery in Kansas City, MO. She died Tuesday, June 10, 2014 at Lawrence Memorial Hospital.

Becky was born May 24, 1946 in Lawrence, KS the daughter of Kenneth and Josephine (Wells) Walker.

She received her BA in Education from the University of Kansas.

She was a lifelong resident of Lawrence other than living in Kansas City, MO from 1979 – 1991.

She was a member of the Lawrence First Christian Church, a member of the Lawrence Civic Choir, Lawrence Music Club, and a former member of the Kansas City Civic Choir. She was the Director of the First Christian Church Children’s Choir, and a former Director of the award winning Cottonwood 4-H Choir. She was a past President and Former Chair of Cottey Cottage in Nevada, MO; a member of P.E.O. Chapter AZ, a past President for the Board of Directors at the Children’s Learning Center, Founder of Project L.OV.E. in KC,MO, and Charter and board member of the Lawrence Central Rotary Club. In 1978 she was the Republican Precinct Committee Chair and in 1995 she became an executive with the National Association of Assisted Housing.

Becky was an elementary school teacher in the Lawrence Public Schools and taught at Maranatha Christian Academy in Shawnee, KS and ran a daycare while she lived in Kansas City, MO.

Becky was a warm and loving daughter, wife, sister, mother, grandmother, and friend. She was an active member of her community and a life-long Jayhawk. She cared for everyone with incredible kindness and shared her love generously. She will be deeply missed by so many.

She married Vincent P. Castro, Sr. on July 17, 1982 in Lawrence, KS. He survives of the home.

Other survivors include three daughters, Emily Castro, Lawrence, Jessica (Pedro) Esteban, Kansas City, MO, Elizabeth (Lonnie) Castro-Walker, Topeka; two sons, Vincent P. Castro, Jr., Kansas City, MO, Anthony R. (Sarah) Castro, Kansas City, KS; three sisters, Julia Anne (Frank) Magana, Kansas City, KS, Martha (Dave) Abendroth, Eureka Springs, AR, Mary (Doug) Harris, Atlantic, IA; three brothers, John (Donna Mae) Walker, Red Oak, IA, Richard (Mary Lynn) Walker, Hutchinson, KS, Paul (Katie) Walker, Eudora, KS; eighteen grandchildren; and twelve great grandchildren.

The family will greet friends from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. Friday, June 13th at Warren-McElwain Mortuary in Lawrence.

The family suggests memorials in her name to First Christian Church Organ Fund or the Children’s Ministry and may be sent in care of the mortuary.

    Condolences to Emily and family. Becky helped me thru my life starting at age o yrs old when my father died. She guided me and counseled me and she truly loved me when I needed it the most. Becky’s strong love for God I fluenced me and led me to love the Lord too. She never gave up on me even thru rough teenage years. I loved and respected her. Becky you are missed.
