Paul Eugene “Butch” O’Trimble Jr.

Funeral services for Paul Eugene “Butch” O’Trimble Jr., 82, Oskaloosa (formerly Williamstown), will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, October 21, 2022, at First Presbyterian Church in Oskaloosa, Kansas.  Burial will follow at Pleasant View Cemetery in Oskaloosa, Kansas. Paul passed away on Monday, October 17, 2022, at Stormont Vail Hospital in Topeka, Kansas.

Paul was born on December 28, 1939, in rural Williamstown, Kansas, the son of Eugene and Louise (Bracken) O’Trimble. After graduating from Perry Rural High School in 1957, he served in the Kansas National Guard for six years.

He married Patricia J. “Patty” Gardiner on October 10, 1959, in Oskaloosa, Kansas.  She survives at the home.  Butch and Patty celebrated 63 years of marriage last week, something he touted to his nurses that day.  During their marriage, they lived and farmed in the rural Williamstown area until moving to Oskaloosa earlier this year. Butch began farming at a very young age, before his feet could reach the tractor pedals. Along with farming, he started the O’Trimble Farm Supply business with his father and brother, Robert.  Butch also served on the boards for the Farm Service Agency (FSA) and the Underwood Cemetery.

Butch was proud of his family and said they were responsible for the happiest times in his life.  Butch was also proud of his crops, often dropping his children off in bean fields so they could chop weeds that were visible from the busiest highways.  He was hard working and instilled the same work ethic in his children, although it was not always appreciated when they were young.  Butch said the most important lesson he learned is that life is not always easy, and it’s best to take it a day at a time, being open to working with whatever happens.

Other survivors include his children: Paul Eugene (Sharon) O’Trimble III, James Charles (Sherry) O’Trimble, Tricia Ellen (John) Schmidt, Jerri Louise Howe, and David Leigh (Christina) O’Trimble; his siblings: Dennis (Loretta) O’Trimble, Donna Bates, and Karen (Robert) Kooser; sixteen grandchildren: Adam O’Trimble, Mitchell (Grace) O’Trimble, Bradley O’Trimble, Johna O’Trimble, Joey O’Trimble, Jacob O’Trimble, Emily (Chris) Wood, Margaret Schmidt, Elizabeth Schmidt, Elijah Schmidt, Spencer Howe, Alaina Howe, Savannah Howe, Mason O’Trimble, Alison O’Trimble, and Gibson O’Trimble; five great-grandchildren: Sadie, Ada, Henley, Hunter, and Emmett.

Paul was preceded in death by his parents and brothers: Jerry O’Trimble, Wayne O’Trimble, and Robert O’Trimble.

The family will greet friends from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Thursday, October 20, 2022, at Warren-McElwain Mortuary in Lawrence.

Memorial contributions may be made in Paul’s name to Perry-Lecompton FFA or First Presbyterian Church in Oskaloosa, Kansas, and may be sent in care of Warren-McElwain Mortuary, 120 W. 13th Street, Lawrence, KS 66044.

Dearest O’Trimble family: We have missed seeing Butch and Patty come in the driveway with arms loaded with sweet corn for quite some time. I remember all of the great conversations and l laughs we all had during corn season. We grew to know your family as a part of ours. Butch was a very hard worker and always a good friend. He will be missed by everyone that he touched and meet. Our thoughts are with the entire family during this time of such a great loss.

    To Our Extended O’Trimble Family:

Our hearts are heavy with grief at the loss of our Beloved Butch. He truly was one of a kind. We will hold on to the memories of good/bad times shared and will forever remember him in our thoughts and prayers. May our Precious Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ grant you peace in your time of sorrow.

We little knew that morning that God was going to call your name. In life we loved you dearly, in death we do the same. It broke our hearts to lose you, but you did not go alone, for part of us went with you the day God called you home. You left us peaceful memories, and your love is still our guide, and although we cannot see you, you are always by our side.

Our family chain is broken, and nothing seems the same, but as God calls us one by one the chain will link again.
    We love you all………………………………..

O’Trimble family you are in my thoughts and prayers. I will always cherish my years that I worked with Butch, he was truly one of a kind and I feel so blessed to have known him. His knowledge of farming and the community were such a great asset to both myself and the FSA office. I know he will be missed but hope you find comfort in knowing that heaven has gained a great one.

    Butch,
You are dearly missed by your Arizona family. You were a loving, compassionate and generous man! What a legacy for the O’Trimble’s, the best of the best! Every time we came to Kansas, you laid out the red carpet for us. We enjoyed our farm days and corn picking for us “city girls”. Our hearts break at this sad time and May God rest your soul. Dennis and Loretta my condolences to both of on the loss of your brother and brother in law. The pictures show what a dedicated, hard working farmer he was. And I must say he found time to travel. I liked the picture of him wearing a bolo. He had good taste!
