Novy Bowman

A memorial service for Novy Bowman, 90, Lawrence, will be held at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, June 20, 2009, at University Community of Christ Church, Lawrence, KS. 

He died June 10, 2009, at his home.

Mr. Bowman was born on March 12, 1919, in Fairland, OK, the son of Ben Franklin and Emma (Sample) Bowman.

He served in the U.S. Navy in the Pacific Fleet during WW II. He retired as a Lt. Commander after 21 years of service.  

He received his Bachelor of Science Degree from Central Missouri State University in Warrensburg, Missouri, Master’s Degree (1966) and Doctorate of Education Degree (1968) from the University of Kansas.  He retired from KU in 1983 as an Assistant Professor in Education.

He was a member and Elder of the University Community of Christ Church for over 45 years and served as sponsor for the Liahona College Group at KU.

Mr. Bowman married Norma Maxine Sheppard on October 10, 1943, in Independence, MO.  She survives of the home.

Other survivors include four daughters, Karen Bowman, Maggie Bowman, both of Lawrence, Bobbi Bowman and husband, Robert Fox, Salem, OR, and Patti  Bowman, Salem, OR; a son, John and wife, Krin Bowman, Lawrence; eight grandchildren, Renée and Carrie Murphy, Holly and Stephen Bowman, Bryon and wife, Angie Fox, Tom and wife Sara Fox, Chad Bibler and wife, Amanda Thompson, Jason and wife, Sara Bibler; four great-grandchildren, Nora, Jack, Lincoln and Evie Fox.

The family will receive friends following the memorial service.

Memorial contributions may be made in his name to Douglas County VNA, Rehabilitation and Hospice Care or Outreach International and sent in care of Warren-McElwain Mortuary.
