Norman Albert Luckeroth

Mass of Christian Burial for Norman Albert Luckeroth, DVM, 84, will be held at 10:00 AM Friday, February 13, 2015 at Corpus Christi Catholic Church in Lawrence. He passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on Tuesday, February 3, 2015 at Meadowlark Estates in Lawrence.

He was born August 2, 1930 in Seneca to Dr. Joseph Clements (J.C.) and Lydia Helen (Strathman) Luckeroth, who preceded him in death in 1958 and 1980 respectively. He attended grade school and high school at Saints Peter and Paul Catholic School in Seneca. He was Valedictorian of his graduating class.

Norman served his country in the United States Air Force as Captain from 1954 to 1956. He married Audrey Wichman on July 13, 1955 while serving in the military in Nagoya, Japan. The couple celebrated 59 years of marriage. She survives him.

He was a member of Corpus Christi Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus, the AVMA (American Veterinary Medical Association), and the KVMA (Kansas Veterinary Medical Association). Norman or “Doc,” to those he knew, was an avid sports fan. After retirement, he played golf whenever possible. He continued to cheer on his beloved K-State Wildcat football team until his death.

Norman carried on the Luckeroth-Wempe K-State tradition by graduating from the College of Veterinary Medicine in 1954. After graduation, Norman entered the Air Force and then returned to his hometown of Seneca, Kansas. He and his father practiced together for about six months when his father suddenly passed away. Norman inherited his father’s practice, Luckeroth Veterinary Clinic, where he worked until his retirement in 1995. Norman gifted the practice to the KSU College of Veterinary Medicine to establish the Norman and Audrey Luckeroth Endowed Scholarship.

Other survivors include three daughters, Michele Walker of Lawrence, Leah LuckerothMD of Overland Park, Louise “Lou” Luckeroth of Topeka; one son, Jay C. (Barb)Luckeroth of Topeka; eight grandchildren, Coleman Walker, Audra Walker, Sabrina Weng, Tina Weng, Kristina Luckeroth, Kayla Luckeroth, Chloe Luckeroth and CheleeLuckeroth Blancas; three sisters, Lydia J. Kalich of Wenatchee, WA, Mary Lou (Neil)Stoering of Portland, OR, and Alice Rose (John) McCarthy of Portland, OR; and one sister-in-law, Pat Luckeroth of Seneca.

He was preceded in death by his daughter, Tina Luckeroth, and three brothers; JosephLuckeroth, Donald Luckeroth and Kenneth Luckeroth.

The family appreciates the compassion and kindness of his caregivers and friends.

A rosary will be recited at 4:00 PM on Thursday, February 12, 2015 at Warren-McElwainMortuary in Lawrence with visitation to follow until 6:00 PM.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests Memorial contributions be made in his name to the Wempe-Luckeroth Scholarship in the School of Veterinary Medicine at Kansas State University in Manhattan, Corpus Christi Catholic Church, or to a charity of your choice. These contributions may be sent in care of the Mortuary.

    Dear Audrey,
I am so sorry for your loss. Norm was Dad’s favorite cousin. Dad, Art Strathman, was so shy that I don’t know if he would have made it through Sts. Peter and Paul and K-State without Norm. Double dates with you and Norm were something my folks recalled fondly.
Norm was a special man. I’m sure the gang from K-State is celebrating Norm’s arrival and his friends from Seneca are welcoming him fondly.
My heart is with you as you adjust to Norm’s passing. May your family be a comfort to you.
    Fondly,
    Sue Strathman Wolff

Aunt Audrey, I am in San Juan meeting with the Realtor that is selling our home, and winding down matters. Hector is in Mission with the Kids ( our pet dogs). Joe told me about Uncle Norm’s death and funeral. I wish that I could have gone, but I am bogged down here, and don’t know when I will be able to fly to KC. I cherish fond memories of you, and I wish that I could have expressed this to you in person. Also, I wish that I could have seen my other lovely Aunts too. I tried to call Cindy to attempt to speak to Aunt Lydia. We had to change our cellphone numbers when we arrived in Mission. I don’t have any of your phone numbers with me. I couldn’t leave Cindy a message because she, apparently, hasn’t set up her voice mail yet; at least, that’s what the recording informed me. As soon as I am able to join Hector in Mission, I would like to drive to Lawrence to presonally convey my sympathy to you. Norman was the next on my long list of people that I want to see. Unfortunately, I was only in Mission a short time, so we were only able to visit Mom who, recently, had a stroke, and Joe & his spouse Tom who is terminally ill prior to flying to Puerto Rico. Best wishes always! Please give my condolences to Aunts Lydia, Mary, Alice, and Pat. ♡Bill
