Maurice Douglas Kimball, Sr.

Memorial Services for Maurice Douglas Kimball Sr., 81, Lawrence, KS, will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday, March 10, 2023, at Warren-McElwain Mortuary in Lawrence, KS. An inurnment will follow at Memorial Park Cemetery with Military Honors. He passed away Wednesday, February 22, 2023, at Plaza West Regional Hospital in Topeka, KS.

Maurice was born on February 19, 1942, in Lawrence, KS, the son of Leslie Clarence and Minnie (Clayborne) Kimball. Maurice was the fourteenth of eighteen children. He served in the Army, where he was trained in building and repairing electronics, then worked for Kansas Power and Light as a lineman. He worked for seventeen years at the Sunflower Ammunition Plant. When Maurice retired, he started Kimball Services, a maintenance and landscaping company servicing local businesses and families.

Maurice’s children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren were his pride and joy. His house was the gathering place for holidays and grandkid sleepovers. He tirelessly supported his children’s sports. He was at every track meet, football game, and even most of the practices. His son warmly remembers that Maurice once carpooled half of their little league football team to practice in his truck.

Maurice loved attending auctions, watching old westerns, and helping his family and people in need. He was always willing to fix a bike, mow a lawn, repair a television, help with a move, or feed someone. Later in life, he began singing karaoke, which he loved. He dressed up in colorful outfits with a glittery western flare and danced while performing old rock and roll songs. He was known for his generosity, his bravery to try new things, and his willingness to invest in people. His life was one of service and love.

Survivors include his children, Maurice Douglas Kimball Jr., Margaret Elizabeth (Bobby) Kimball – Riley, Mickey Allen Kimball Sr.; siblings, Eleanor Kimbrough, Phyllis Henderson, Bernard Kimball, Margaret Smith, Lowetta Yearling, Martha Tucker, Leon Kimball, William (Bobby) Kimball, Karen Reese, Helen McMillion, Larry Kimball; grandchildren, Marcus Kimball, Michael Kimball, Anthony Kimball, Alex Kimball Williams, Mickey Kimball Jr., Alyvia Kimball, Alysia Kimball, Angelo Kimball, Kayla Kimball, Austin Mater – Kimball; and eleven great-grandchildren. Maurice was preceded in death by his parents, Leslie and Minnie Kimball; and his siblings, Geraldine Gunn, Clarence “Sunny” Kimball, Doris Brice, Leslie Kimball, Wesley Kimball, and James “Jimmy” Kimball.

Memorial contributions may be made in his Maurice’s name to Lawrence Parks and Recreation: Youth Sports Division and may be sent in care of Warren-McElwain Mortuary, 120 W. 13th Street, Lawrence, KS 66044.
