Mary Ruth Burton Denney

Family services for Mary Ruth Burton Denney, 89, Lawrence will be held at a later date. Inurnment will be held at Oak Hill Cemetery. She passed away Thursday, April 7, 2016 at her home.

Mary was born February 6, 1927 in Columbia, MO the daughter of Oscar and Mae Dell (Colvin) Cunningham.

She was a member of the Church of Christ and the VFW Ladies Auxiliary.

She worked for K-Mart Distribution Center for six years before working at Walmart from 1984 until retiring in 1998.

She married Roy Ray Burton January 29, 1946 in Lawrence. He preceded her in death January 2, 1987. She later married John “Dale” Denney November 11, 1995. He preceded her in death February 9, 2008.

Survivors include her daughters, Elizabeth Barnes, Lawrence, Patricia Barnes, Lawrence, KS, Janice “Darlene” Thompson, Lawrence, stepdaughter, Shirley McNear, Columbia, MO; sons, Robert “Bob” Carl Burton, Lawrence, stepsons, James Denney and John Denney, both of Lawrence; 29 grandchildren; numerous great grandchildren; and numerous great-great grandchildren. She was also preceded in death by her parents and two brothers; and two sisters; and one son, Oscar Ray Burton.

In lieu of flowers memorials may be made in her name to the American Cancer Society and may be sent in care of Warren-McElwain Mortuary.

    Burton-Denney Family,
    I did Mary’s hair for many years and always looked forward to seeing her.
    Mary had a heart of gold and she loved her family dearly. I have many hand towel that she made and I will cherish for a long time. She will be deeply missed.

    Burton-Denney Families,

    I have many fond memories of time spent in the Burton home. Mary always made me feel special with her kindness and macaroni and tomatoes. I will miss her smiling face and positive attitude.
    My sympathy to both families in your time of grief.
