Mary Ellen Carden

January 09, 1923 ~ March 24, 2024

Mary Ellen Carden (Webb) was born January 9th, 1923 in Argentine, KS to Oliver Preston Webb and Verna Webb (Fraser). She graduated from Argentine High School in 1941, where she was a member of the National Honors Society.  After graduation, she obtained her Nurse’s Aide certification from the United States Citizens Defense Corps. She was united in marriage to Jack R. Carden on March 10th, 1946. They had three children, Gary Richard, Julie Kay, and Larry Randall.

She took pride in attending her church functions, and was an active member of the Roeland Park United Methodist Church and later a member of the St. Paul United Church of Christ in Eudora. In addition, she enjoyed playing cards in her free time, specializing in Bridge and Pinochle, playing competitively in weekly card clubs. She was also an accomplished seamstress, making many doll outfits and costumes for her grandchildren, and any other blankets or small projects that she desired to sew.  Mary Ellen was also an avid bowler, competing in a weekly bowling league until she was 90. In her later years, she enjoyed spending time with her friends and close family and enjoying a glass of wine on the front porch.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Oliver and Verna, brother, Thomas; her late husband, Jack; son, Gary; and daughter, Julie.  She leaves behind her son, Larry (Debbie) of the home; granddaughter, Julie Brooke; and grandson, Christopher.

Flowers may be sent to the Warren-McElwain Mortuary in Lawrence or memorial donations may be made to the Burlington (Kansas) High School FFA Chapter Scholarship Fund in memory of Mary Ellen Carden and may also be sent in care of Warren-McElwain Mortuary, 120 W. 13th Street, Lawrence, KS 66044.

Had the pleasure of knowing her from ages 99-101 and was continuously charmed by her detailed memory, on-demand jokes, and appropriately placed sass. She always knew the going ons at Larry & Debbie’s farm and would help fill me in on the happenings with the horses and Moose. I will miss seeing her. Lots of Love

My sympathy to the family. I enjoyed knowing Mary Ellen at RPUMC. I miss all of my RPUMC “family” now that it is closed! May her memories and stories live on in each of you.
