Mark Alan Nicolay, 66, passed away November 28, 2021, surrounded by family.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, December 4, 2021 at Holy Family Catholic Church at 409 East 8th Street in Eudora, Kansas.
Mark was born August 22, 1955 in Lawrence, Kansas to Rex and Mary Ann (Schehrer) Nicolay.
He grew up in the Eudora countryside and graduated from Eudora High School in 1973. Mark lived in Lawrence, KS, Osborne, KS and the Kansas City metro prior to returning to his hometown of Eudora in 1994. During these years, Mark pursued a career in insurance with Kansas Farm Bureau, followed by a transition to an IT career with Lee Jeans and Cerner and subsequently followed his entrepreneurial spirit and became self-employed.
Upon returning to Eudora, he pursued his life-long passion of farming where he raised cattle, farmed crops, tended to his garden and cared for an array of farm animals. His love for the farm was all encompassing and was most enjoyed in the company of family and friends. Mark cherished visits from his grandchildren. Together they would feed treats to the pony, which he earlier gifted them, or go on tractor adventures to see baby calves. He hosted nature walks on the farm for children who visited. Mark enjoyed life’s simplest pleasures and was happiest on his farm surrounded by family and friends.
Mark was preceded in death by his father, Rex. He is survived by his mother, Mary Ann, Eudora, KS; and his son, Jason (Sarah-Beth), Mission Hills, KS and his four grandchildren, Emerson, Camden, Weston and Lillian. Mark is also survived by his brother, Monte (Lori), Spring Hill, KS and his two nephews, Zachary and Jacob.
A Rosary will be held at 5.00 p.m. with visitation to follow until 7.00 p.m. on Friday, December 3, 2021 at Warren-McElwain Mortuary – Eudora Chapel, 1003 John L Williams Drive, Eudora.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Mark’s honor to the Douglas County 4-H Foundation and may be sent in care of Warren-McElwain Mortuary, 120 W. 13th Street, Lawrence, KS 66044.
