Marjorie Ruth Hill Smith

Memorial services for Marjorie Ruth Hill Smith, 99, Lawrence, will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, May 26, 2022, at Warren-McElwain Mortuary in Lawrence. Burial will be at 1:30 p.m. on Thursday at Cherry Mound Cemetery in Westphalia, KS. Marjorie passed away on Wednesday, May 18, 2022, at the Presbyterian Manor where she had lived since 2005.

Marjorie was born on August 28, 1922, in Westphalia, the daughter of Mark D. and Nellie M. (Stephenson) Hill. She lived on the family farm in the Cherry Mound community, went to elementary school in the one room school at Cherry Mound, then to Westphalia High. She returned to the Cherry Mound School as its teacher for two years.

Marjorie married Andrew Murry Smith on September 23, 1945, in Chanute, KS, and they moved to Lawrence shortly after. She was a Trust Officer for First National Bank for 27 years until she retired. She was a lifelong member of First Presbyterian Church and became very active in the Lawrence Pilot Club in retirement. When she and Murry moved to Lawrence, she was not in any way a sports fan, but she grew to be as faithful a Jayhawk as there is.

Marjorie was preceded in death by her parents, by her sister, Treva R. Cole, and by her husband Murry. Survivors include her son, David Hill (Robyn) Smith, granddaughter Emily (Nate) Kalberer, granddaughter Maggie Smith, and one great-grandson, Caden Kalberer.

Memorial contributions may be made in Marjorie’s name to First Presbyterian Church or The Good Samaritan Fund at Presbyterian Manor and may be sent in care of Warren-McElwain Mortuary, 120 W. 13th Street, Lawrence, KS 66044.

I knew Marge for so many years, such a beautiful caring person. She would come by to see me at The Etc Shop we would shop, visit and I would get to hear about her Family that was so Special to her. Everyone in Lawrence that went to the Lion’s Club Antique Show knew Marge as she sold tickets and was able to visit with everyone.

Rest In Peace Aunt Marjorie. Dave and Robyn and Family, we are sending you love and condolences. We were blessed to have you in our lives for so many years and will miss our visits and sharing our mutual birthday. You were always so proud to pull out the photos of your grandchildren and now your great grand baby. Sharp as could be, I could ask you questions about our family history and you almost always had the answer for me. When Steve and I visited last year he was complaining about it was hard for him to bend over and pick things up and you slyly dropped a Kleenex from your pocket and bent down to pick it up! We had a good laugh over that! I remember when you turned 50 and we all celebrated in Garnett at mom and dad’s house. I asked you if you felt 50 because that just seemed so OLD at the time to me and you looked me right in the eye and said “I don’t feel a day over 18!” It was that sense of humor and a zest for life and involvement with other people and activities that will be missed by us all. Our loss is Heavens gain and it is comforting to know that you are surrounded by loving family members there who have been waiting patiently for you, Love, Your Niece and Nephew, Marilyn & Steve, Lauren and David and Rachel Kohn

So sorry for your loss. We lived across the street from Marj and Murray for several years and enjoyed many visits with them. Marjorie was so nice to our young boys. She would even give them large candy bars on Halloween. They thought they had won the lottery.

Marge was always one of my favorite guests when I was hosting on Wednesday at the Manor.
We always had to talk about the Jayhawks and enjoyed seeing her at the basketball games.
She was a wonderful and caring lady .

    Pat Anderson:
Marge lived next door to my mother-in-law at the manor. I was able to have lunch many times with these wonderful ladies and often teased them that they had a secret code to knock on the wall to each other. When Phil and I decided to move to a duplex at the Manor, we were able to spend more time with Marge. I never believed her age. She was very energetic and remained interested in many things. She is indeed missed.
