Marjorie Lou (Folks) Black passed away peacefully, surrounded by her loved ones, on December 7, 2022. She was 93 years old.
Marge was born in October 1929 to Guy and Eunice (Manter) Folks as the youngest of six children, raised on a farm. Marge attended Riverside, a one-room schoolhouse, and Liberty Memorial High School in Lawrence, KS. Then she attended Lawrence Business School. Marge worked at Drake’s Bakery and Pippert’s Auto Parts Store.
At Pippert’s, she met the love of her life (James T. Black) while he was delivering parts to the store. They were married on November 6, 1948. Shortly after, they started a business, Lawrence Freight Line. Their family included four children, Stan, Jim, Brad, and Nancy. In 1964 they created a second business, B.C.& R. Storage Co. Marge and Jim were married 57 years before his death in 2006.
Marge was an avid bowler, golfer, and member of the American Business Women’s Association. Marge and Jim loved to travel and wintered for many years in Texas. Marge loved family reunions and never missed a chance to gather, even when her health was wavering. She was gifted with a memory for details, including names and family history. She loved watching the Jayhawks, Royals, and KC Chiefs. Marge enjoyed the community of friends and neighbors at Pioneer Ridge for the past three years.
Marge is survived by four children: Stan (LaDene), Jim (Debra), Brad & Nancy Rowland (Neil); six grandchildren: Aaron Black (Maria), Amy Miller (Kevin), Sheila Gonser (Nate), Lindsay Black, Daniel Rowland & Mark Rowland; and seven great-grandchildren: Blaine & Ashley Miller; Katelyn, Emily & Gabe Gonser; Jake & Justin Black.
Marge was preceded in death by her husband Jim; siblings Virginia Ayers, Herb Folks, Kathryn Holloway, Richard Folks, John Folks; and grandson: Anthony Black (AJ).
Folks Road in Lawrence was named after Marge’s parents, whose farm was adjacent to that road.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials be sent to Visiting Nurses or Lawrence Meals on Wheels. Please send in care of Warren McElwain Mortuary (120 W. 13th St. Lawrence, KS 66044).
Visitation will be at Warren McElwain Mortuary on Wednesday, December 14, 2022, from 6-8 pm. Services will be held at 10:30 am on Thursday, December 15, at Trinity Lutheran Church (1245 New Hampshire St.) A graveside burial will follow at McLouth Cemetery at 2 pm.
Dear Members of the Black Family,
So sorry to hear about Marge.Everyone of us in the salon knew her and loved her. She was such a sweetheart and always had a smile.
So hard to lose loved ones but I hope knowing she is in heaven with family and friends brings comfort to all of you.
One of my favorite memories is the summer AJ brought her to JCPenny for her appointments….
Keeping you in thought and prayer .

Dear Nancy and family,
I was so sorry to hear of your mom’s passing. Although I didn’t know your mom, I imagine she had a beautiful smile, a generous spirit, a fun sense of adventure, and an encompassing kindness…because the apple never falls far from the tree!
Take comfort in sweet memories!
Aunt Marge was a truly lovely lady . Even though I’m not “technically “ family, she always made me feel like I was. She was always so happy to see Dennis and I when we came to visit and was always concerned about me instead of focusing on everything else. I’ll miss her so much, but also know I’ll see her on the other side. Fly high lovely angel ❣️
I am so sorry for your loss , she had such a beautiful smile and showed such kindness !! Black family reunions were so memorable!
Love the picture you chose of Marge. This is the way I remember her best. She always made me feel welcomed in her home. Have wonderful memories of Saturday chili and chocolate chip cookies before the KU football games, and Marge rolling her eyes as her adult kids belched the alphabet and complete sentences. We were all surrounded by her love and support!
Dear Nancy and the extended Black family,
I’m so sorry to hear of your Mom’s passing, yet I hope it brings a sense of relief for you too. I just sent her Christmas card! I remember her sweet smile and loved reading Vickie’s comment of the belching of the alphabet! Take good care of each other!~
Sending healing and many hugs to the entire family. Your mom was a great person whose life and love of life has come thru each one of her children.. May Marge always RIP.. Thank you for sharing those memories with all of us.. Watching the Jayhawks, the Chiefs and so many other special times..
So sorry to learn of Marge‘s passing. I knew her through our involuntary in the American Business W omen’s Association over 30 years ago where she was a vibrant and well liked member.

Brad, we known each other for over 50 years. I am so sorry that you lost your mother. It’s been quite some time that I’ve seen you, and I sure miss that, old friend. Your mother is a great peace and happiness, with our Lord and Saviour Christ Jesus. I’m sure you will see her again. Well, old hippie, be safe, stay healthy, and be happy. Your old friend, Dennis
