A Celebration of Life Service for Margaret Ann Schwartzburg, 85, of Lawrence, Kansas, will be held at 11:00 a.m. on June 17, 2023, at St. Margaret’s Episcopal Church in Lawrence. A reception will follow. Margaret Ann passed away on May 13, 2023, in Prairie Village, Kansas.
Margaret Ann was born on February 28, 1938, in Miami, Florida. She was the daughter of Col. Robert and Katherine (McLin) Pentland Jr. She retained her love of Florida and all things tropical throughout her life. She was preceded in death by her parents and her former husband, David Schwartzburg.
Margaret Ann’s love for the ocean led her to study marine biology at the University of Florida and The University of Miami where she received a Bachelor’s Degree in both marine biology and English.
Map, (as she was known by her friends) worked in the United States Senate, for Life Magazine, and traveled the world with her characteristic enthusiasm for adventure and new experiences. Her favorite spot, however, was Lawrence, Kansas, where she lived the last 50 years of her life. In Lawrence, Map volunteered for the food pantry, CASA, the PTA, and the Brownie Scouts where she was a troop leader. She was the co-owner of a lovely Lawrence home decorating business, Imagine That! Map was the best cheerleader at Dodge’s football games, Kate’s track and cross-country meets, and later at Maclin and Cameron’s soccer, football, and basketball games. Family and friends were Map’s greatest accomplishment. Margaret Ann will always be remembered for her love and friendship with her children and grandchildren, a home always decorated to perfection, and the most beautifully decorated table for any holiday or occasion. She was treasured for her generosity, kindness, thoughtfulness, and beautiful smile. She will be remembered always for her passionate love of color in her wardrobe and decor. She simply radiated joy and will be greatly missed.
Margaret Ann is survived by her children, Katherine and husband, Ward Strahan of Prairie Village, Kansas, Dodge and his wife, Melissa Schwartzburg of Ocala, Florida, and Laurie McClure of Stevensville, Michigan, and six grandchildren.
Memorial contributions may be made in Margaret Ann’s name to the Lawrence Humane Society or Just Food in Lawrence. Contributions may be sent in care of Warren-McElwain Mortuary, 120 W. 13th Street, Lawrence, Kansas 66044.
Very special lady!❤️
As we all know, Mappie was beautiful inside and out! She was a wonderful neighbor and friend and is greatly missed. Katie, you are a rock star and I am thinking of you and your family at this most difficult time!
Dear Katie,
So sorry to hear about your Mom. She was a wonderful friend and lady. Enid worked in OB when you were born. At that time we just moved to Lawrence, but she came home from LMH and told me how an excited and joyful couple were celebrating the birth of their baby girl, namely you. Anyway, MAP was so thoughtful and we enjoyed many lovely moments of hospitality in your home over the years. Your parents adored you and your family. May she rest in Heavenly peace.
Our thoughts and prayers are with you and yours.
I worked for Margret Anne in the 80s cleaning and occasionally babysitting Katie. She was one of the kindest and classiest humans I have ever had the privilege of knowing. she made the world a better place just being in it.
She was a wonderful neighbor, always so positive and kind! I am. so sorry for your loss/
Margaret Ann lived next door to me in The Cottages for many years and I have wonderful memories of those days! I was very fortunate to have her as my dear friend and neighbor.
I was a taste tester for her specialties in the kitchen! She was always whipping up something out of this world! Entertaining was her thing!
And her fondness for beautiful décor was truly evident in her home.
We shared a love for animals and her beloved dog “Priceless” aka “Pricey” was her very special partner!! A stray cat was always fed and watered with Margaret Ann trying to locate its owner.
She will be missed by many for being a beautiful and faithful friend, kind and thoughtful to all!
Margaret Ann will be remembered fondly by the many people whose lives were touched by her kindness . She was my dear neighbor for many years. She was one of the most generous souls I have known. She would bring me delicious treats like pot de creme or cake with caramel icing. She made the world a better place and it was my honor to know her.
With all respect and love, Rest In Peace dear one.
