Mabel Nelson

 

Graveside services for Mabel V. Nelson, 91, of Killeen, Texas and former long time Lawrence resident will be 1:30 p.m., Thursday, October 29, 2009 at Memorial Park Cemetery.

Mrs. Nelson died Saturday, October 24, 2009 in Killeen, Texas.

She was born December 29, 1917 in Lawrence, Kansas the daughter of Joel A. and Stella F. (DeWitt) Robinson.  She was a graduate of Liberty Memorial High School and later attended Business College in Lawrence.

She worked for many years for Farmland Industries and later for the University of Kansas.  She retired in 1979.

She was a member of Ladies VFW Auxiliary # 852 in Lawrence, Kansas, the Karen Temple Ladies in Waco, Texas, Disabled American Veterans Auxiliary, Jayhawk Chapter # 22 and Adah Chapter # 7, Order of Eastern Star.

She was married to Harley A. Davenport, who preceded her in death.  She later married William Truman Nelson, who preceded her in death in June 1986.

Survivors include two sons, Charles Arthur Davenport of Prattville, Alabama and Michael Arnold Davenport of Overland Park, Kansas; two step-sons, William D. Nelson of Lake Whitney, Texas and Robert D. Nelson of Arlington, Texas; her longtime companion, Rolland Johnson of Killeen, Texas; 16 grandchildren and eight great grandchildren and four great-great grandchildren.  She was preceded in death by one son, Richard A. Davenport in July 2009.

The family will receive friends from noon to 1:00 p.m., Thursday at Warren-McElwain Mortuary.  The family suggests memorial funds to Disabled American Veterans and may be sent in care of the mortuary.
