Louise Landis

Memorial services for Louise M. Landis, 90, Eudora, KS, will be held 9:30 a.m. Monday, July 23, 2012 at Warren-McElwain Mortuary in Lawrence.  She died on Thursday, July 19, 2012 at Medicalodges of Eudora.

Louise was born on May 9, 1922 in rural Syracuse, MO the daughter of Earl and Emma (Siegel) Steele.

She graduated from Syracuse, MO public high school in 1940.  Louise earned an Associate Degree in education from Central Missouri State Teachers College.  She taught two years in a one-room school house near Otterville, MO before returning to teach at Syracuse High School where she also coached girl’s basketball and volleyball.
In 1945 she moved to Kansas City to the business offices of TWA.  While at TWA she met and married Armin V. Landis of Lawrence.  They married on May 11, 1947. 

Together they owned and operated the Landis-Davis Paint Store in Lawrence from 1947 through their retirement in 1983.  They also began Landis Frames in 1962 and continued that business through 2002, at first through Quantril’s Flea Market in Lawrence and later through their home.

Louise was active over nine years in Cub Scouts as a Den Mother.  She was involved in PTA at McAllister Elementary in Lawrence, serving as President during her boy’s grade school years.

She was an amateur artist with an eye for color and design.  She created hundreds of egg shell Christmas ornaments.

Her artistic talents served her well in the picture framing business.

Survivors include two sons, Armin Landis, and wife, Nancy, Oskaloosa, Alan Landis, and wife, Carol, Lawrence, KS; five grandchildren, Carrody Buchhorn, Jacob Landis, Jeff Landis, Krista Monroy, and Aaron Landis; three step grandchildren, Jennifer Jewett, Kimberly Bates, Asa Johnson; six great grandchildren and 6 great step-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Armin Landis, July 9, 2012; one sister, Dorothy Koenke; one son, Mark Landis, in 2011, survived by his wife, Renee.

The family suggests memorials in her name to the New Life Christ Church, 619 Vermont Street, Lawrence, KS and may be sent in care of the mortuary.

    I am so saddened to learn that just as your family is beginning to heal, you have lost yet another loved one. Now, Louise and Armin belong to the ages—together forever!

    Wow, Armin. Losing both parents in a weeks’ time. I know we haven’t seen each other since Rusty’s days, but when I saw the notice on your dad… and then your mom, I wanted to send you my sympathies. I see you and Nancy are still together–that’s great, good for you! A big hello to her.
    I’m in San Francisco now, but Mom is at Brandon Woods, so I visit Lawrence a few times a year.
    I’m sorry for your loss–they both had good, long lives.
