Lila Rose Peters

Graveside services for Lila Rose Peters, 85, Lawrence, will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, June 28, 2024, at Oak Hill Cemetery. The family will greet friends from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. on Thursday, June 27, 2024, at Warren-McElwain Mortuary in Lawrence.

It is with great sadness that the family of Lila Rose Peters shares of her passing on 06/22/2024 at the age of 85. Lila was born in Brockwell, Arkansas, to the late Leslie and Rosa Bond on January 28, 1939, the 6th of 7 children. Being part of a large family shaped Lila’s formative years and family remained the most important thing to Lila throughout her life. Lila was a dedicated mother, prolific artist, skilled baker, and had a heart for music and her church. With an interest in genealogy, she traced much of her family heritage to England and thoroughly enjoyed all things British, especially regency era novels and British murder mysteries. Those close to her knew Lila was small but mighty, having survived many of life’s difficulties with her ability to stand up for what she believed in or share any opinion in tact. In addition to her loving husband, John Peters, Lila was preceded in death by her sister Miriam Barnes, (Roland), her brothers Forrest Bond, (Evelyn), and, Leland Bond, sisters-in-law, Wilma Bond, and Mele Bond, brother-in-law, Jeff Cunningham, and nephew Gary West.

Lila is survived by her four children John Peters of University Place, WA, Barbara Sylvester (Noel) of Wamego, KS, Stephen Peters of Colorado Springs, CO, and Michael Peters (Megan) of Colorado Springs, CO. Lila delighted in her role as a grandmother to Kelley Castaneda (Victor), Dane Sylvester, Logan Sylvester (Andrea), Kelsey Crutchfield-Peters (Benjamin Karin), Sean Crutchfield-Peters, Kayla Peters, Hannah Peters, and Jake Peters. She also found joy as a great-grandmother to Lincoln, Reese, and Nora. Left with decades of fond memories are her siblings Bob Bond (Jovan) of Austin, TX, Skip Bond of Victorville, CA, and Sharon Cunningham of Tacoma, WA as well as 12 nieces and nephews.

Memorial contributions may be made in Lila’s name to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital or Lawrence Public Library and may be sent in care of Warren-McElwain Mortuary, 120 W. 13th Street, Lawrence, KS 66044.

I was so sad to hear about Lila, who I affectionately called “Missy”. We had so many great memories together, including cheerleading and singing in our trio while at Williamsburg High School.
    She will be dearly missed.
