Liese-Lotte Edita Tevington

Memorial Mass for Liese-Lotte Edita Tevington of Lawrence will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday, July 9, 2014, at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church in Lawrence. Inurnment at Fort Leavenworth National Cemetery will follow at a later date.

Mrs. Tevington died July 3, 2014, at home in Lawrence, where she had lived for 16 years.

She was born in Lauenförde, Germany, the daughter of Johanna and August Sabedot.

Mrs. Tevington met and married William Tevington in Germany, where he was stationed after World War II. He survives of the home.

They returned to the United States where they had seven children, moving regularly to different states and countries as they were reassigned. All along, she raised the children and managed the home happily — always putting her family ahead of herself. She worked as a businesswoman, becoming the first female manager of a Montgomery Ward store and was later manager of the Gold Nugget Jewelry Store in Emporia, Kan.

Mrs. Tevington was a devoted homemaker and collector of German nutcrackers. She enjoyed crossword puzzles, needlepoint, reading the Saturday column, and her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was an active member of St. John’s parish and a fervent Republican.

She was preceded in death by her parents, a brother, a sister and a son, Willard Thomas.

Survivors include three sons — Andrew and wife Mary Tevington, Oklahoma City, Okla., Kevin and wife Marilyn Tevington, Comox, B.C., and Brian and wife Peggy Tevington, Houston, Texas — three daughters — Barbara Tevington, Lawrence, Deborah and husband John Kealing, Chesterfield, Mo., and Victoria and husband Tim Teegarden, Windsor Heights, Iowa — and a daughter-in-law, Kathryn Tevington, MD, Grand Forks, N.D.

Other survivors include 13 grandchildren — William (Joe) Dixon, Lawrence, Christina Tevington, Michael Tevington, Mary Tevington, all of San Antonio, Texas, Jon Tevington, Houston, Texas, Jenny Supon, Arlington, Texas, Bary Tevington, Milan, Kan., Christopher Teegarden, Windsor Heights, Iowa, Andrew Teegarden, Madrid, Iowa, Jonathan Kealing, Minneapolis, Minn., Justin Kealing, O’Fallon, Mo., Jenna Kealing and Jill Kealing, both of Chesterfield, Mo., and four great-grandchildren, Gwen and Catherine, Milan, and Jordyn and Brianna, O’Fallon.

The family will greet friends one hour before the service on Wednesday at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church. She will be missed by her family and friends. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials to the American Kidney Foundation and may be sent in care of Warren-McElwain Mortuary.
