Memorial service for Leonard Edwin Dodson, Sr., 90, Lawrence will be held 2 p.m. Saturday, March 13, 2010 at Warren-McElwain Mortuary. He died February 15, 2010 at his home.
He was born on March 1, 1919 in McCloud, OK the oldest son of Lillian Couch and Thomas E. Dodson. He graduated from the University of Oklahoma School of Engineering in 1942.
On July 18, 1943 he married Martha C. Downing, who preceded him in death in 2007.
After serving in WWII he returned to the University of Oklahoma where he received a Masters Degree in Educational Guidance. He then received a PhD in Counseling from the University of Illinois. He worked for the Veterans Administration as a guidance counselor at Tulsa University, and as a psychologist in Oklahoma City, Ok and Topeka, KS. He and Martha were long members of the First United Methodist Church in Topeka till moving to Lawrence in 2004.
Leonard is survived by two brothers, James Dodson of Enid, OK and Jerry Dodson of Pryor, OK; a son Dr. Leonard E. Dodson, Jr. and wife, Jackie, of Amarillo, TX; a daughter, Charlotte E. Knoche and husband, Harry, of Lawrence; his 6 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren Katie Gilman and husband, Tony, their children Jordan and Hayden Gilman of Austin, TX, Marnie Dodson and Sampop Naugli of Fairfax, VA, David Dodson and wife, Jessica, and their children Samuel, Maxwell, Tabitha and Eligha Dodson of Charlotte, NC, Emily Dodson of Austin, TX, Lillian Mason and husband, Aaron Paden, and their children, Arlo and Oscar Paden of Lawrence, KS, and Natalie Mason of Lawrence, KS.
Memorial Contributions may be made in his name to the Charity of the Donor’s Choice and sent in care of Warren-McElwain Mortuary.
We commemorate comrades that have transferred to higher headquarters. While their presence will be missed we remember them in our hearts until such time as we are called to join them.

We want to share our condolences to this family and know that eventhough we may have never met him but I shared the company of his granddaughter and is a blessing to have her and to know that she is part of a great man. May you remain strong through this time of sorrow.

Seems like just yesterday when I first met Leonard. I really treasure the time that I spent with him. We had some great conversations and I learned so much about his remarkable past. I feel so blessed to have seen him one last time a week before his passing. We had a short conversation and I told him I had to leave and I told him I loved him and we both began to cry. I know that he is at God’s right side in the Garden of Eden for all the wonderful things he did in his life. What a wonderful blessing for me to have know Leonard.

The staff here at the Topeka & Shawnee County Public Library miss Leonard. He was a great guy to talk to and provide audio books for over the years. We miss him coming to the library.
