Kenneth Harmon

Graveside services with full military honors for Kenneth Harmon, 92, Lawrence will be held at 11:00 a.m. Monday, July 21, 2014 at Mt. Muncie Mausoleum in Lansing, KS. He died peacefully Friday, July 18, 2014 at his home surrounded by his loving family.

Kenneth was born October 12, 1921, in Ellsworth, KS, the son of Bert M. and Sylvia (Westerman) Harmon.

He served as a fighter pilot and flight instructor with the rank of 2nd Lt. in the United States Army Air Corps during World War II.

He was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Leavenworth, KS. He was admitted to the American Bar Association, Kansas Bar Association, Leavenworth Bar Association, KU Alumni Association, Elks Club, and Leavenworth Kiwanis Club where he served as a past president. He was also a member of the Leavenworth Salvation Army Board, and he was on the Cushing Memorial Hospital Board for many years.

He received his BS in Business and Juris Doctor Degree from the University of Kansas in 1950. After entering private practice in Leavenworth, he was appointed probate judge in 1952 and appointed district judge in 1961. At retirement in 1990, he was the longest sitting judge in the state, serving for 38 years.

He married Genevieve Sue (Cook) on May 27, 1951 in Leavenworth, KS at the First United Methodist Church. She survives of the home.

Other survivors include two sons, Kevin Harmon and wife, Cindy, Lawrence; Kelly Harmon and wife, Sheryl, Spring Hill, KS; one daughter, Susan Coleman and husband, Roy, Lawrence; four grandchildren, Erin Harmon, Lawrence, Melissa Harmon, Olathe, KS, Chris Coleman, Andrea Coleman, both of Lawrence; and numerous nieces, and nephews. He was preceded in death by one son, Keith Harmon; seven brothers; and two sisters.

The family will greet friends from 4 – 6 p.m. Sunday, July 20, 2014 at Warren-McElwain Mortuary in Lawrence.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial in his name to a charity of donor’s choice and may be sent in care of the mortuary.
