Karyn K. Bredehoft

Karyn Kay Pishny Bredehoft, Lawrence, KS

Karyn Kay Bredehoft was born December 15, 1949 in Topeka, Kansas.

A devoted wife, loving mother and grandmother, Karyn, age 68, while surrounded by family, went peacefully to be with her Lord on Wednesday, November 21, 2018 after valiantly battling cancer for over 12 years. She will be remembered for her legacy of faith, family, and service. A longtime member of Immanuel Lutheran Church, she actively sang in the choir, played handbells, was on the property and grounds committee which allowed her to share in the decorating and renovating decisions for the facilities, and took great delight in creating beautiful flower arrangements for Sunday services. A faithful KU Alumna and avid sports enthusiast, she regularly attended KU games alongside her husband and cherished companion of 47 years, Marvin E. Bredehoft. She was a regular presence at Medical Arts Pharmacy which she co-owned and managed with Marvin for over 30 years.
An only child, Karyn was born in Topeka, but moved to the Lawrence area in 1959. Her love of music began early with the piano and graduated to the clarinet in her teenage years. She chose to carry on her mother’s legacy by also attending KU to receive her Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education. While a student, she met and married Marvin at KU’s Danforth Chapel. She and Marvin welcomed two sons, Todd and Timothy, and while raising them, she served as a substitute teacher and volunteer in the local schools. Karyn took great pride in her children and eight grandchildren striving constantly to bless them. Over the years Karyn developed a love of traveling via train with Marvin, preparing grand family meals, reading magazines, and shopping for unique gifts. One of her crowning achievements was the 2017 renovation of Medical Arts Pharmacy, improving the aesthetics, functionality, as well as implementing numerous technological advancements.

Karyn is survived by her husband, Marvin E. Bredehoft, and two sons, Todd C. Bredehoft (Christina) of Fort Worth, TX, and Timothy S. Bredehoft (Deborah) of Lawrence, KS. She is also survived by eight grandchildren: Johnathan, Amber, Matthew, Elizabeth, Julianna, Christopher, Samuel, and Caleb. She is preceded in death by her parents, Stanley and Vivian Pishny, and granddaughter Gloria Joy Bredehoft.

The family will greet friends from 6:00 – 8:00 pm Monday, November 26, 2018 at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Lawrence, KS.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 am Tuesday, November 27, 2018 at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Lawrence, KS. Burial will follow at Oak Hill Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made in her name to Immanuel Lutheran Church or LMH Endowment Oncology Fund and may be sent in care of Warren-McElwain Mortuary.

It is not hard to imagine a first class train dispatched to Lawrence last Wednesday to pick up a very special person. Karyn would have been ready for the trip. She would no longer suffer from intense pain and she would be free of worry. Of course, she would think about missing her loved ones, but knew that she had prepared them for this day. She would see them again. Most of all she would look forward to meeting her Lord and sharing his presents in her new home.

We were blessed to have had Karyn in our life.
