John Robert Haase

John Robert Haase, lovingly known as “Moose,” passed away at the age of 78 on January 3, 2025, in Lawrence, Kansas. Strong in both stature and mind, he was a man whose presence brought abundant kindness, boundless humor, and remarkable wisdom to all who knew him.

John’s creativity and dedication were legendary—especially when it came to science projects. If you asked for his help, you could count on him taking the reins and working tirelessly until his vision was complete. And, with a twinkle in his eye, he would remind you of his hard work for years to come.

He is survived by his best friend and beloved wife, Lyn Chance. He was a devoted father to Devon (Tony) Kim and Wyatt (Ann) Haase, and a cherished “Grandpapa” to Jonah Kim, Josie Kim, and Sawyer Haase.

John lived a life full of love, laughter, and cherished memories. Those who knew him can only imagine he is now taking a long walk with his dog, Corky—rescuing more animals, stirring up some “good trouble,” and reminding us all to drive safely.

Private family services will be held at a later date.

John was a fraternity pledge brother of mine at K.U. From the beginning I recognized that he was one of a kind and not afraid to speak truth to power, I.e. upperclassmen. That didn’t always make his fraternity life a picnic, but he persevered. A few years ago I put together a blog on our fraternity years for a pledge class reunion. John featured prominently in some of the funniest publishable stories.

We enjoyed a good relationship through graduation, including a semester as apartment mates at 10th and Louisiana after our frat house burned down.
When we returned to Lawrence we saw John around town occasionally and always enjoyed our interactions – our sons competed in some of the same sports. John helped me cope with the loss of our friend Tom Wobker by encouraging me to pursue a project to honor Tom’s memory. We saw each other periodically in recent years – but not often enough.

Dear Devon and Wyatt, So sorry to learn of the passing of your father. I remember John when he was on the Planning Commission years ago. I was working for neighborhood interests at that time that were often impacted by planning decisions. I always appreciated your father’s wise counsel, and his ability to understand important citywide planning issues. I respected his intellect, and his interest in listening to public concerns and suggestions. His focus and decision making was always dependent upon what was best for our City. Best wishes to you and yours during this difficult time. Candy Davis

I have just heard of John’s passing. He was my friend starting in grade school (First Methodist Church Sunday School) thru High School and KU. Lost track of him until we moved back to Lawrence in 2015. Great guy and great golfer. He will be truly missed.
