John Neal Beers

Funeral services for John Neal Beers, 74, Lawrence will be held at 11:00 a.m. Monday, January 9, 2017 at Warren-McElwain Mortuary in Lawrence. Burial will follow at Oak Hill Cemetery. He passed away Wednesday, January 4, 2017 at Lawrence Memorial Hospital.

John was born January 16, 1942 in Lawrence, KS the son of James William and Mary Elizabeth (Canderia) Beers.

He was a graduate of Lawrence High School.

He was a member of Arab Shrine Temple and past Director from 1996 – 1999, and was currently Class Director. He was known as the “Onion Man” for selling Shriner’s Vidalia onions. He participated in many clubs including, Director Staff, The Royal Order of Jesters, Masons, Van Club and the American Pool Players Association. He was an avid fisherman and bowler and enjoyed hunting. He spent his time boating, watching his grandsons playing sports, cooking, painting, woodworking and gardening. He was a competitive speed roller skater in his younger years.

His printing career started at Kansas Color Press and when it closed he went on to become a Lead Pressroom Foreman for Vile Goller Fine Arts Printing and Lithography Company in Kansas City, KS until he retired after many years.

He married Linda Marie Stewart June 25, 1988 in South Park ~ Lawrence, Kansas. She survives of the home.

Other survivors include his daughter, Angie Beers-Dey (Erik), Baldwin City, KS; son, John “Jackie” Beers, Jr. (Wendy), Gardner, KS; six grandchildren, Tristan Terfler, Zander and Jagger Dey, Samuel, Jonathan, Joel Beers; and brother Glenn Beers (Rosella), Lawrence. He was preceded in death by one daughter, Lori DeSha, 1995; infant grandson, Joshua Beers; three sisters, Opal Beers Marshall, Hazel Beers, Betty Beers Burchett; and brother, Clyde Beers.

The family will greet friends from 3 – 5 p.m. on Sunday, January 8th at the mortuary.

Memorials may be made in his name to Shriners Hospitals for Children – St. Louis and may be sent in care of the Warren-McElwain Mortuary.
