Homer Broers

Celebration of Life for Homer Oliver Broers, 89, Eudora will be held 1:00 p.m. Thursday, July 2, 2009 at the Warren-McElwain Mortuary-Eudora Chapel. Burial will follow in the Eudora Cemetery.

He died June 27, 2009, at the Lawrence Memorial Hospital.

He was born April 14, 1920, in the Weaver Bottoms Community in Douglas County, Kansas the son of George J. and Anna A. (Spitzli) Broers.

He graduated from Eudora High School and later received an Engineering Certificate from the University of Kansas.  During World War II,  Homer moved to San Diego, CA, where he worked as Quality Assurance supervisor in  an airplane factory that assembled the B- 29 Bombers, there he met his wife, Ann.  They returned to Eudora where he and brother, Oscar owned and operated Eudora Chevrolet, which was later sold to Winters Chevrolet, in Lawrence where he worked, prior to retiring he owned and operated Broers Auto Sales.   During his retirement he worked as a contractor and also had several rental properties.

He was a life long member of the Eudora United Methodist Church, but most recently attended St. Paul United Church of Christ in Eudora.  He was a member of Odd Fellows, Eudora Lions Club, Masonic Lodge, Eudora School Board, City Council, and CPA Board.  He also served as the Mayor of Eudora from Dec. 23, 1966 until April 1967.

He married Ann Richardson on October 8, 1944 in San Diego, CA. She survives of the home.

Other survivors include two daughters, Jan Wurtz, Branson, MO; Judy Worrells, Melbourne, FL; one son Ted Broers, Longmont, CO; 6 grandchildren, and 13 great grandchildren.  He was preceded in death by his siblings.

Family will greet friends from 6-8 p.m. Wednesday, July 1, 2009 at the Eudora Chapel.

Memorials may be made in his name to Breast Cancer Research, Douglas County Senior Services or the Eudora Schools Foundation and may be sent in care of the mortuary.
