Emeteria Gallegos

Emeteria “Terri” Gallegos 90, of Lawrence, KS passed away on Monday, April 10, 2023, surrounded by loved ones at her home. A rosary will be held from 6-8p.m. on Tuesday April 18, 2023, at Warren-McElwain Mortuary, for family and friends. A Catholic Mass for Emeteria will be held at 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, April 19, 2023, at St. John’s Catholic Church in Lawrence, KS.  Burial will follow at Holy Family Catholic Cemetery, in Eudora, KS.

Emeteria was born on March 3, 1933, in Eudora, KS, the daughter of Juan and Magdelene (Gutteriez) Barajas. Terri graduated from Lawrence High School in 1953. After high school Terri dedicated her lifelong career to caring for those in need through the Visiting Nurses Association.

Terri was a dedicated member of St. John’s Catholic Church.  She stayed actively involved and volunteered her spare time to the church.  She would spend weekends leading up the fiesta preparing food, and saving eggs shells for the fiesta.  Terri was an avid KU fan, Rock Chalk. She regularly attended games and was able to watch the boys bring home the national title in 2022. Terri also enjoyed watching the price is right regularly.  It was not uncommon to walk into her house with the the sound of Mexican music playing throughout the house, or the price is right or all my children soap-opera on the TV.

Terri met the love of her life Jesus Gallegos in Topeka, KS. They married on April 13,1983. Terri and Jesus enjoyed attending dances, wedding, and family get togethers.  They enjoyed working outside, in the garden, or planting flowers together. They built a home full of love and trust.  Everyone was and is still welcome and safe at their home they built. They loved and cherished one another until the end.

Jesus survives at home, along with their children, Anthony Gauna, Charles (Denise) Gauna, and Annette Easum, and a sister Juanita Barajas, eight grandchildren, Joseph (Gina), Anthony “AJ” Jr., Veronica (Justin) Hanna, Laken, LeVon, Jon, Kara(Kenny),Douglas Jr., along with thirteen great-grandchildren, and large extended family.

Family mattered most to Terri, she was always willing to help anyone in need.  Terri was the roots to our family and so many traditions, from Sunday dinners, to holiday get togethers, to tamale making on Christmas Eve.  If you were lucky enough to have Terri in your life, I am sure she left some impression on you too, rather that was her infectious laugh, her generosity, or her comforting hand for those she cared for. We are all lucky to have the memories we have with her.

Preceding her in death are her parents, two sisters Margret and Mary, two granddaughters, Kimberly and Christina, along with other family members.

The family suggests memorials in Emeteria’s name to the St. John’s Catholic Church, as well as flowers which both may be sent in care of Warren-McElwain Mortuary, 120 W. 13th Street, Lawrence, KS 66044.
