Edwin “Ed” Mumford

Funeral Services for Edwin ‘Ed” Mumford, 84, Lawrence, KS will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, June 19, 2009, at Warren-McElwain Mortuary.  Burial will follow in Memorial Park Cemetery with Military Honors.  He died on Tuesday, June 16, 2009 at Lawrence Memorial Hospital.

He was born on September 27, 1924, in Pawnee City, NE, the son of Edwin and Pearl Nutt Mumford. He had lived in Lawrence since July 1952.

Mr. Mumford was the maintenance supervisor for USD 497.  He was the former head custodian for the school district. He retired in 1991 after 28 years of service. He was a former union pipefitter.

He was a WWII U.S. Army veteran.  He was a Bronze Star recipient while serving in the Asian Theatre. 

Mr. Mumford was a member of Dorsey-Liberty Post #14 of the American Legion, Scottish Rite Bodies of Lawrence, Acacia Lodge #9 A.F. & A.M.  He was a member of the First Christian Church in Lawrence.  Mr. Mumford received the Buford Watson Public Service Award. 

He was married to Doris Golden on February 14, 1952, in St. Joseph, MO.  She survives of the home.

Other survivors include a daughter, Lisa and husband, Chuck Hoag, of Lawrence, a son, John D. and wife, Leslie Green Mumford, of West Point, NY; a sister, Jerry Kaiser, Oregon; seven grandchildren; Jenna Mumford, Meghan Mumford, Lauren Mumford, Taylor Hoag, Chase Hoag, Austin Hoag and Courtney Hoag.  He was preceded in death by a brother and three sisters.

The family will greet friends from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Thursday at Warren-McElwain Mortuary.

The family suggests memorials in his name to Douglas County Visiting Nurses, Rehabilitation and Hospice Care or to LMH Palliative Care and sent in care of the mortuary.
