The memorial service for Dorothy Smith Anderson, 100, Lawrence, KS, will be announced in December. Private inurnment will be at Pioneer Cemetery. She died on Friday evening, November 19, 2010 at Lawrence Presbyterian Manor.
She was born January 6, 1910 in Duluth, MN, the daughter of Phillip Alden Smith and Leora Pearl Fenton Smith. She grew up on the Minnesota Iron range at Chisholm, MN, and graduated from Chisholm High School in 1928. She attended Hibbing Junior College, and graduated from the University of Minnesota in 1934 with a Bachelor of Science degree. She was a member of Delta Delta Delta Social Sorority.
Mrs. Anderson was a long time volunteer at Audio Reader, volunteered at Lawrence Memorial Hospital, and also volunteered at Cordley Elementary School with handicapped children. She was active in Delta Delta Delta Alumni activities, and Chapter FZ of PEO Sisterhood, where she was a 50+ year member. She was also a 50+ year member of Plymouth Congregational Church in Lawrence. Mrs. Anderson was a member of the University Women’s Club, the KU Retiree’s Club, the KU Alumni Association, the Friends of Spencer Museum, the Lawrence Public Library, and the Lied Center at KU.
She married Kenneth Eugene Anderson on August 1, 1934 at the Smith family cabin on Clearwater Lake, MN. Dr. Anderson was the former Dean of Education at KU, and preceded her in death October 19, 1985.
Survivors include two sons, Peter and wife, Joan Anderson, of Lawrence, Philip and wife, Patricia Anderson, of Lawrence, a brother, Alden Fenton Smith, of Maryville, TN, three nieces, a nephew, four grandchildren including: Craig, Todd, and Ken Anderson, a granddaughter, Rebecca Anderson Hughes, of Norman OK, and four great-daughters (Carolyn Hughes, Kirsten Hughes, Kayleigh Anderson, and Meghan Anderson).
The family suggests memorials in her name to the Good Samaritan Fund at the Lawrence Presbyterian Manor and may be sent in care of Warren-McElwain Mortuary.
