Carl “Gene Van Hoesen

 

Funeral services for Carl E. “Gene” Van Hoesen, 85, Lawrence, KS, will be held 1:30 p.m. Friday, August 28, 2009, at Warren-McElwain Mortuary.  Interment will be follow at Prairie City Cemetery, Baldwin City, Kansas.  He died August 26, 2009, at his home.

Mr. Van Hoesen was born October 30, 1923, in Willow Springs Township, KS, the son of Carl V. and Alice (Gleason) Van Hoesen.  He was raised by his father and stepmother, Elnora Anderson Van Hoesen.

He attended Douglas County rural schools and graduated from Baldwin High School in 1941. 
Mr. Van Hoesen served three years as a MoMM2C on a submarine chaser crew in the Pacific during WW II. 

He retired from Farmland Industries as a foreman in 1986 after 33 years of service. 

He was an active member of the Kaw Valley Bluebird Association.  He attended First United Methodist Church. 

He married JoAnn Churchbaugh on April 10, 1946, in Colorado Springs.  She survives of the home.

Other survivors include a son, Bob and wife, Barbara, Tucson, AZ; a daughter, Cheryl Harrod and husband, Les, Lawrence, KS; a sister, Marion Sullivan and husband, Ed., St. Mary’s, OH; four grandchildren, Matthew and wife, Courtney, Emily Ford and husband, Jason; Lee Ann Van Hoesen, and Megan Harrod and Michael Knight; and four great grandchildren.  He was preceded in death by his parents.

The family will greet friends from 5 p.m. – 7 p.m. Thursday at the mortuary.

Memorial contributions may be made in his name to Baker University or the Douglas County VNA, Rehabilitation and Hospice Care and sent in care of the mortuary.
