Birdie Wilburn

Funeral Services for Birdie Mae Wilburn, 94, Lawrence, will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, July 29, 2010 at Warren-McElwain Mortuary, Lawrence.  Burial will follow at Memorial Park Cemetery.  Visitation will be held prior to the services from 9:30 – 10:30 a.m.

She died Thursday, July 22, 2010 at Lawrence Memorial Hospital.

Mrs. Wilburn was born January 1, 1916 in Lexington, TN, the daughter of George W. and Anna Jane (King) Small.

She  attended Montgomery High School, Lexington, TN and was a graduate of the Madame C.J. Walker College of Beauty.

Mrs. Wilburn was a member of the Ninth Street Missionary Baptist Church.  She was a mother of the church and at one time served as president of the Women’s Auxiliary.  She was a member of the Montgomery Alumni Association, American Legion Auxiliary-Argonne Post, the Friendship Club, and a life member of the N.A.A.C.P.

She was active in the Community Chest.  She was involved in many philanthropic activities supporting charitable and nonprofit organizations.

Mrs. Wilburn is survived by two sons, Howard J. Wilburn, Lawrence, KS and Del E. Wilburn, Topeka, KS; two daughters, Joyce E. Haile Selassie, Lawrence, KS, and Vicki L. Wilburn, Gainesville, TX; a sister, Inez Flakes, Lexington, TN; one granddaughter, Dr. Tsion E. Haile Selassie, Gainesville, TX; and two great grandchildren, William and Noah Malé, Gainsville, TX.

The family suggests memorials to the United Negro College Fund and may be sent in care of  the mortuary.
