Bernard Sr.

Bernard L.Sr., 97, died in Evergreen Colorado March 27, 2010.

Born in Slater, MO. to the late Julia Ann Haley and Joseph Francis.

He graduated from Greybull High School in Greybull, WY and attended the University of Wyoming in Laramie.  After World War II he graduated from The University of Kansas with a B.S. in Business followed by a J.D. from the K.U. Law School.

He was an attorney for the State of Kansas.

During WW II he joined the Navy and served in the Pacific theater.  He participated in the Battle of Iwo Jima, and was awarded a Bronze Star.

Bernard was a long time member of the Kansas Bar Association, The University of Kansas Alumni Association, The Knights of Columbus Council 1134 of Alexander, LA., American Legion Liberty Post 14, Lakeview Fishing and Shooting Association, and St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church.  He was active with St. John’s Cub Scout Pack 3057 serving on the board and as a Scout Master.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his wife, Rubylee Biggs, and his brother Joe H..  He is survived by his son Bernard L. Jr. of Georgetown, CO and a daughter Julia  Caruth, (Paul) of Durham, N.C. three grandchildren Joe Caruth and fiancee Katie Kennedy, Yvette Caruth Nebeling all of Durham, NC. and Nick Caruth of Winston-Salem, NC and  one great grandchild, Juliette Nebeling.

Visitation and rosary will be at 7 p.m. Thursday, April 8, 2010 at Warren McElwain Mortuary.  A memorial mass will be celebrated by Msgr. Vince Krische at  11 a.m. Friday, April 9, 2010 at St Lawrence Catholic Center,  1631 Crescent Road, Lawrence, Kansas.  Burial will follow at Mt. Calvary Catholic Cemetery.  Family and friends are invited to a luncheon following the burial.
