Ava Lea Denton

Funeral services for Ava Lea Denton, 81, Lawrence will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday, August 15, 2016 at the Lawrence Free Methodist Church. Private burial will be later at the Mt. Hope Cemetery in Topeka, KS. She died on Sunday, August 7, 2016 at her home.

Ava was born July 14, 1935 in Ft. Riley, KS, the daughter of John F. and Minnie E. (Wright) Davies. She moved to Lawrence in 1967 from Topeka, KS.

She attended Stormont Vail Nursing School.

She worked as a Registered Nurse for six years. She then worked as a school nurse secretary for school district #497 for 21 years.

She was a member of the Lawrence Free Methodist Church and the Countryside TLC Group at the church.

She was married to John “Jack” Harvey Denton March 22, 1958 in Junction City, KS. He preceded her in death November 28, 2011.

Survivors include two daughters, Barbara A. Guthery of Lawrence, Susan Lea and husband, Hector Agosto of Gardena, CA; four grandchildren, Mason Dean Guthery, Hope Elizabeth Agosto, Ciera Briann Guthery, and Sarai Marie Agosto; twin sisters, Margaret Ann Dacus (Larry), Junction City and Mary Ella Humm, Holmen, WI; and sister-in-law, Jane Warren (Hugh) Greeley, CO. She was also preceded in death by her two brothers; and son-in-law, Kenneth Guthery.

The family will greet friends from 4 to 6 p.m. Sunday at the Warren-McElwain Mortuary in Lawrence.

The family suggests memorials in her name to the Lawrence Free Methodist Church or to Douglas County Visiting Nurses, Rehabilitation and Hospice Care and may be sent in care of the mortuary.

    Dear Barb, Susan, and Families,

    We are all so sad about Ava Lea’s passing.

    Margaret and I, along with our families, have lost a loving and caring sister and aunt, and you and your families have lost a loving Mother and Grandmother, who was always praying and supporting you.

    Heaven has opened its doors to her with everylasting life. She is now rejoicing with Jesus, Jack, and Mom and Dad, among others

    How clearly I remember being a new school nurse and having Ava Lea and Robbi Levi by my side. I learned patience and resilience when dealing with our school’s children from Ava Lea’s quiet teaching. I will always appreciate how she enriched my practice and my life.

    I am writing to let you know how much of a blessing your Mom has been to me and my family. Every time I think of her, I see is her beautiful smile.
