Allen “Tommy” Thompson

 

Private inurnment for Allen “Tommy” Thompson, 89, Lawrence, KS, will be held at a later date at Memorial Park Cemetery in Lawrence.  He died on Friday, July 3, 2009, at his home following an extended battle with cancer.

He was born on August 3, 1919, in Eureka, KS, the son of Earl & Mabel Wilson Thompson.

Mr. Thompson was a World War II US Army veteran and fought in five major battles in the European theatre.  He received a medal from France for his participation in the invasion at Normandy.

He was formerly employed as an ironworker.  He is a member of the Ironworkers Local #10 and was a Business Agent in the Topeka office for 25 years.  He was a former president of the Kansas State Building and Trades, Topeka Building Trades, and Ironworkers District Council.

Mr. Thompson was married to Dorothy Jean Cochran on January 28, 1948, in Kansas City, MO.  She survives of the home.

Other survivors include a son, Scott and wife, Alexandra Thompson, of Lawrence; three sisters: Wanda Gibson, of Ft. Collins, CO, Jean Thompson, of Canon City, CO, Theita Bergen, of Falcon, CO; and a grandson, Zach Thompson, of Ft. Collins, CO.  He was preceded in death by a grandson, Jason Thompson, six brothers and five sisters.

The family suggests memorials in his name to The Dream Factory and may be sent in care of the Warren-McElwain Mortuary in Lawrence.
