Memorial Services for Richard M. “Dick” Hoover, 84, Lawrence, KS will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, March 17, 2009 at the Centenary United Methodist Church in Lawrence, KS. Private inurnment will be at a later date.
Mr. Hoover died on Friday, March 13, 2009 at Brandon Woods Retirement Community in Lawrence.
He was born on May 26, 1924 in Little River, Kansas, the son of Foster & Maxine McGaffey Hoover. He moved here from Sanford, NC in 2002.
He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II and the Korean War.
He received both a B.S. & M.S. in Chemical Engineering from the University of Kansas.
He retired as a chemical engineer from the PPG Industries in Pittsburg, PA and prior to that, had worked for the Monsanto Chemical Company.
Mr. Hoover was a member of the Centenary United Methodist Church in Lawrence. He had served as a volunteer for the Habitat for Humanity, Lawrence Memorial Hospital and the Spencer Art Museum.
He was married to Elaine Howard on November 4, 1945 in Kansas City, KS. She preceded him in death on May 5 1988.
Survivors include two daughters; Leslie Ann Hoover of Columbia, SC, Alicia Rieder of Lawrence, KS, a son, Richard H. Hoover, Northport, MI, a brother, Herbert I. Hoover of Denver, CO, a sister, Phyllis Rouch of Nashville, TN, six grandchildren; Christy Anderson, Daniel Rieder, Richard A. Hoover, Ginger Ebert, Alex Orozco & Lysa Gaston and two great grandchildren.
The family suggests memorials in his name to Habitat for Humanity or to the Douglas County Visiting Nurses Rehabilitation and Hospice Care and may be sent in care of Warren-McElwain Mortuary.
