He taught Native American Law at Haskell Indian Nations University. He argued cases in federal and state supreme courts for conservation issues, Indian federal and state rights, gaming laws, and the preservation of numerous historic and architecturally unique buildings in Douglas County.

The best part of my years in law school was clerking for Lance . .what a novel introduction to the law . .I learned so much about the difference between an attorney and an advocate . .he was funny, irreverent and deadly serious about doing the right thing, and he was a great mentor and a good friend . . . I will miss him

Like so many others here in Lawrence, I had the honor of knowing Lance. From our first meeting as my landlord in the mid-70s, to his managing my will and other personal business in the ’90s, to the occasional and always welcome encounter around town, Lance was always warm, welcoming, and interested. His commitment to this community and the people within it will never be forgotten.

Here is one memory that is a tiny example of Lance’s special ability to bring people together: we at Free State Glass had a wonderful employee from Cypress named Ulviye whom I introduced to Lance at one of our functions. A little while later Lance invited Debbie and I to a dinner at his place where he introduced us to Ulviye’s parents who were in country. Before the night was over we had all been invited to attend the young woman’s wedding in Cypress along with their good family friend from Kansas-Lance Burr.

The memorial tribute to our Lance William was beautiful this Spring afternoon and 3rd Monday of May. The poem written and presented by his dearest niece was so beautiful and fitting of Lance, completely. Thank you so much for sharing. Lance was the best listener and best conversationalist ever. He was genuinely interested in what people, genuinely concerned and caring. He made us all feel so very special. I got to know him nearly 35 years and worked for him from 1978 to 1983, and ran his campaign for Attorney General in 1982. He dearly loved people so very much and it showed. He was always such a kind, caring & loving true gentleman. Lance William Burr, you are the best and now you are with the angels of Heaven. We all love you so much. Our hearts, thoughts and prayers to his dearest family…May God Bless <3

Blessed are they that mourn for they shall be comforted. Matthew 5:4 May God’s love shine on you in this time of loss and sorrow. May the prayers of those who care, console and strengthen you. I pray that you find peace and comfort during this difficult time. Philippians 4:6, 7 encourages us “Do not be anxious over anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication along with thanksgiving let YOUR petitions be made known to God; and the peace of God (Psalm 83:18) that excels all thought will guard YOUR hearts and YOUR mental powers by means of Christ Jesus”.
