With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of longtime educator, Martha Ann Oldham, on December 14, 2024, at the age of 87.
Born in Beloit, Kansas, Martha Ann was known for her unwavering kindness and devotion to family and friends along with a love for animals. She grew up in Emporia and began her career in education at Lawrence High School in 1967, after spending seven years working in the Manhattan school district. Martha Ann made history as the longest-serving educator in the Lawrence school district, officially retiring on July 1, 2013, after 46 remarkable years as the school librarian at Lawrence High School. Her passion for her students and her dedication to the school community were unparalleled.
She formed lifelong bonds with many students and colleagues and was a beloved fixture on the sidelines of LHS Lions sports events. Martha Ann was often seen taking pictures of football, baseball, track, cross country, and other sports, sharing them on team websites to celebrate the athletes. She also shared a deep love for KU basketball and attending games.
Martha Ann is survived by her loving and supportive extended family. She was preceded in death by her parents, Russell and Agnes Oldham, and her husband, Kenneth Newell, whom she married in Elko, Nevada in 1991.
A graveside service is being held at Oak Hill Cemetery in Lawrence on Wednesday, December 18, 2024 at 2p.m. and all those who were touched by her are invited to celebrate the legacy of a remarkable woman who touched so many lives. In lieu of flowers, the family has asked for donations to the Lawrence Schools Foundation (www.lawrenceschoolsfoundation.org) in her memory.
Martha was a wonderful lady and i knew as a student. She always greeted you with a smile and was very helpful. she will be missed.
