Memorial services for James Dawson Jr., 81, Lawrence, will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, May 25, 2024 at Wesley Towers Chapel in Hutchinson, KS. James passed away on Friday, May 17, 2024, at LMH Health.
James was born on December 5, 1942, in Vernon, TX, the son of James Dawson, Sr and Jessie Mae (Gifford).
He was a Service Technician for an Energy Company for 25 years and retired in 2005. James also delivered food for the Lawrence Public Schools and retired in 2013.
James loved music all his life and played the Bass Guitar. He played in bands and for various organizations including Ninth Street Baptist Church in Lawrence, and Macedonia Baptist Church and Second Missionary Baptist Church, both of Hutchinson.
He married Brenda L. White on January 2, 1964, in Hutchinson, KS. She survives at home.
Other survivors include his sons, Jerome R. Dawson of Hutchinson, Theron J. Dawson of Lawrence, grandchildren, Shaqune Mecham, Jeremy Dawson, Jarrod Dawson, Shayla Dawson, Amiah Dawson, Keyara Dawson, Sophia Dawson, Aubrea Dilbeck, great-grandchildren, Jayden Mecham, Aurora Mecham., and Aaralyn Doby. And all his nieces and nephews.
James was preceded in death his parents, son, Tyrone R. Dawson, siblings, Sammie L. Dawson, Lula Mae Dawson, and Ava Morris.
Memorial contributions may be made in James’ name to Senior Resource Center for Douglas County and may be sent in care of Warren-McElwain Mortuary, 120 W. 13th Street, Lawrence, KS 66044.

I just found out that James had passed. I worked with him at Durham School Services. I miss getting a morning hug from him every day. He was a special man.
