Elvin Harlow Winslow

Elvin Harlow Winslow of Eudora, Kansas passed away March 20, 2024.  He was born the third child in a family of four children on May 22, 1938 in Abilene, Kansas to William J. and Bessie F. E. (Robson) Winslow.  Elvin grew up on a farm in the Talmage Community and graduated from Dickinson County Community High School.  He earned an associate degree from Brown Mackie School of Business in Salina, Kansas and attended Emporia State Teachers College.

Elvin served in the US Army as a member of the ARADCOM Choral Group touring Nike Missile sites across The United States for two years.  He was discharged following one additional year of service on the 94th Missile base in Pusan, South Korea.  Following his military service, Elvin began his career working for NCR first in Topeka, Kansas and later transferring to Dayton, Ohio where he lived for forty plus years.

On July 26, 1959 he was united in marriage to Nancy F. Schwarz at Mt. Pleasant Presbyterian Church and they have celebrated sixty plus years of marriage together.

Elvin was a creative and talented artist working with stained glass, silver and turquoise jewelry and pencil drawings.  But his primary media was creating metal sculptures ranging in all sizes and materials including steel, brass and copper.  His sculptures have been displayed in multiple galleries and his commissioned work has been installed at the City Building in Englewood, Ohio and a twelve foot tall abstract stainless steel tree outside the Finkelman Auditorium at Miami University Middletown Campus.

Another of his passions was harnessing the wind to power either sailboats or to lift his powered parachute into the sky.  He also regularly participated in a Dulcimer jam session enjoying the opportunity to share and contribute in music with others.

Elvin was preceded in death by his parents, William J. and Bessie F.E. Winslow and his brother, William J. Winslow, Jr.  Survivors include his wife, Nancy; sons, Stephen Winslow (LeAnn) of De Soto, Kansas and Philip Winslow (Jodi) of Beavercreek, Ohio; two grandchildren, Madison Winslow and Samantha Winslow; two great grandchildren, Rayla and Rhys; and sisters, Esther Minter and Ardis Holt (Eldon).

The inurnment of ashes will be at Greenlawn Cemetery in Abilene, Kansas on March 26, 2024 at 11:00 a.m.  A reception for family and friends will be held at the New Trail Fellowship Church, 1157 – 2400 Avenue, Abilene, Kansas and will begin at 1:00 p.m. with a light lunch provided.

The family suggests memorial gifts may be made to the Talmage Historical Society and Museum in Talmage, Kansas or to a charity of your choice and may be sent in care of Warren-McElwain Mortuary, 120 W. 13th Street, Lawrence, KS 66044.
