Robert M. Simpson, 89, passed away on March 18, 2024, at his home in Lawrence, Kansas. Born to Lloyd and Martha (McSpadden) Simpson on May 24, 1934, in Wichita, Kansas, Robert (Bob) grew up in Wichita, Kansas City, Missouri and Newton, Kansas. He graduated from Newton High School in 1953. Bob attended the University of Kansas, graduating in 1958 with a degree in Architecture.
Bob married Carol Elaine Fluharty, on June 8, 1957, and he would be the first to say they had the most fantastic marriage anyone could ever imagine. After college, Bob’s military career took them to many parts of the United States and the world. He was commissioned in the Army artillery and was later transferred to Corps of Engineers.
Bob proudly served our country for 20 years, retiring as a Lieutenant Colonel. During his military service, Bob held many positions from Artillery Forward Observer to Combat Engineer Company Command and Facilities Engineer. His military career included assignments to Europe, the Middle East, and the Far East. He twice served as President of the Society of American Military Engineers. Bob received a master’s degree in architecture while in the military.
After retiring from military service, Bob moved to Lawrence where he was associated with Hedges Real Estate for 20 years. He retired from real estate in 1999. An avid golfer, Bob was a member of Lawrence Country Club for over 40 years, serving as club president for one year.
Bob loved his family dearly and was a very proud father and grandfather. Bob and Carol had four children, Mark (Mickey) Simpson, Scott Simpson, Nancy (Hank) Jeronimus and Jeff Simpson. He was grandfather to six grandchildren, Robert Jeronimus, Elizabeth Jeronimus, Jack Jeronimus, Olivia (Dylan) Gottschalk, Stacia (Adam) Borker and Alexa Simpson.
With Carol often at his side, Bob befriended many. Always dressed for the occasion, Bob had a big smile, a contagious laugh and a gregarious presence that exuded warmth and enthusiasm. His enthusiasm was always at its highest when sharing stories of Carol and him or proudly providing updates on his children and grandchildren.
A private graveside service celebrating and honoring Bob’s life will be held at Mount Muncie Cemetery in Lansing, Kansas.
Memorial contributions may be made in Robert’s name to the Charity of your choice and may be sent in care of Warren-McElwain Mortuary, 120 W. 13th Street, Lawrence, KS 66044.
Bob was one of the first people I met after moving back to Lawrence in 2015. I cannot count the number of rounds of golf I played with him. During the great weather these last few weeks several of Bob’s friends would make a point of stopping by the house next to number eleven green for a quick chat. He was always happy to see us and expressed a strong desire to get back on the course. Unfortunately, that was not meant to be and he will be sorely missed.
A tremendous loss to not only the family but those who so enjoyed his sense of humor. He will be missed as a long time member of the McDonald’s coffee group meeting on Thursday mornings. A knowledgable and most informed gentleman always with a smile, Bob was also a well informed gentleman about what was going on in the community. God Bless this sole admired by so many.
Scott and Family: Richard and I want to send our thoughts and prayers to you and your family. I’ve known all of you for many many years. They both shopped at Dillon’s during my 38 years of employment. Scott you were our D.J. at our wedding. May God Bless you and your family at this time. Love Richard & Mary Ann Wieneman
What a blessing you and Carol have been to our lives. We’ve loved every trip we took together both in Europe and here in the US. We’ve laughed till we cried. Such good times and memories to hold in our hearts. Sending love and prayers to all the family. We are with you always in spirit. Greek and Kit
So very sorry to hear about Bob. I always saw him with a smile on his face and friendly hello. The old coffee group is gathering in heaven and planning their next golf game.
To Carol and the Simpson family,
We are deeply saddened to hear about Bob’s passing. What a delight it was to talk with him on a regular basis at Lawrence Country Club or at the coffee group when I could attend. He was an amazing veteran, businessman, husband, and family man. He will be missed. You are all in our thoughts and prayers. He always had an interest asking about Enid and our family. What one fine guy and gentleman!!! RIP Bob.

Carol, I am so sorry for you and the family. Bob was such a great guy and we are all better for having known him. I will always remember his disarming smile and laugh (as well as yours).

Bob was a delight and I so enjoyed getting to know him over my lending/realty years.
Still can see him carrying his briefcase…smiling!
Prayers for you all at this time of sorrow!
