Fern R. Hale passed away January 21, 2024. Fern was born on September 27, 1932, in Detroit, MI, the eldest daughter of Otis and Gwendolyn Eaton, who preceded her in death. Also, preceding her in death was her daughter Marsha and siblings Carlton, Crandall, Caren, Faye and Colin.
Fern’s world revolved around her children, and she leaves behind Mark, Caren, Rodney, Darwin, Marla, Marvin, and Maurice to celebrate her life. She leaves her love to her 18 Grandchildren, 20 Great grandchildren and 15 Great-great grandchildren.
Ms. Fern worked for the Department of Social Services for the State of Michigan. She taught at-risk students at East Heights School in Lawrence, Kansas and was a strong advocate for education. An artist, poet, actress, muralist, indigo dyer, an Ordained Missionary, and community activist were just a few of her accomplishments.
Fern’s legacy of creativity, her “just do it” spirit, and grace will continue to thrive through her many beloved relatives, friends and the multitude of relationships she nurtured throughout her life.
Ms. Fern requests no formal services, but wants everyone to know, “You can do anything you put your mind to”.
Special thanks to the staff of Pioneer Ridge and Bridge Haven Senior Care Facility.

Nana, you are such a remarkable woman. Your confidence, wisdom, creativity, quick-wit and conviction. I remember being enamored by your commitment to wearing heels and a red lipstick daily. I loved to admire your collection of living dolls, your decor of cheetah print seat cushions and African masks. Thank you for letting me play dress up in your jewelry boxes while we ate candied orange wedges, your favorite. I am thankful to still have a pair of your earrings…I love you so much.

I humbly offer my condolences and best regards to the family of the late Ms. Fern. Although I did not have the privilege of knowing her personally, her dignified and indomitable spirit brightens the character of her progeny, and thus shines forth to all whose lives they touch. For this, I owe a deep debt of gratitude. We can only begin to repay it by consulting her guiding presence to influence our actions and by carrying her values in our hearts. Through this, may we honor her in memory and manifest enduring legacy. Requiescat in pace
