John passed away August 8th, 2023 at the K.U. Medical Hospital. John was born May 26, 1942 in Hallowell, Ks., the son of Alvie H. & Ruth A. Guy. John’s family moved to Lawrence in 1952. He attended Lawrence schools and graduated from Lawrence High School in 1960. He was in the U.S. Navy and spent much of his service time aboard the USS Ranger CV-61 aircraft carrier.
After being in the navy he then worked at the Lonestar Cement factory at Bonner Springs, Ks.
Then the Coors warehouse in Lawrence as a forklift driver for several years, and later a driver for a greenhouse flower delivery around the state and out of state based in Linwood Ks.
He became interested in woodworking several years ago and began making sweet little shelves and wooden wall cabinets for knick-knacks and other wooden items that he sold at craft shows throughout the state for several years. He crafted a small table with checkerboard top for checkers/chess that had a little drawer to hold the pieces and he won a ribbon for it at the county fair. He was very proud of that. He also enjoyed going fishing and camping.
He was a husband, a father to 4 children and 8 grandkids. He was a Navy man. He loved his time in the service and being aboard the USS Ranger CV-61 and loved to show off his collection of Navy photos and keepsakes to everyone.
All those years of diabetic problems-ups and downs and scares, and surgeries and amputations and infections, cancer treatments, radiation, sepsis, pneumonia, losing his eyesight almost totally, it seemed like he was invincible (hence our nickname for John was the ‘energizer’) So many times he was so sick and I was even told to expect the worse several times and the next morning, he’d be hollering at me to get him outta there now!!! and soon he’d come home. John is now free from this body and all the pain and frustration that comes with it. The chaplain after giving John a ‘Veterans Recognition Certificate of Honor’ said,
“John R. Guy You may stand down in peace”
John was preceded in death by his parents and baby brother, Alvie Howard Guy, Jr.
John is survived by his wife, Carol; his four children, Kim Hubbel, husband, Dave, Bryon Transue, wife, Stephanie, Nicole Guy, Jennifer Rice, husband, Dustin; eight grandchildren, Kyrstan Hubbel, Haydon Hubbel Lloyd, Brandon Transue, Emily Burton, Lindsey Rice, Aiden Johnson, Weston Rice, Clayton Rice; sister and brothers, James Guy, wife, Genevieve, Jack Guy, wife, Susan, Jill Johnson, husband, JC; and many relatives in the Southeast Ks. area, & many cousins, nieces, and nephews.
A private family service at the Veteran’s Plot at Oak Hill Cemetery, with Military Honors is pending.
I am very sad about my old friend John’s passing. However, John and I have been friends for almost 70 years and I comfortably realize that his long years of suffering has been relieved. He is now in the arms of his Lord & Savior!
Extremely sad but thankful he is no longer suffering in pain. He was a good man. Will be missed by many. Our love to Carol and the family.
Sorry to hear of John’s passing and my prayers go out to the family. He was a fighter for sure and now can rest in peace.

John represented the best of what the US Navy and being part of the crew of USS Ranger are. He represented both beyond measure, and I’m proud to have served aboard the TOP GUN OF THE PACIFIC FLEET doing my best to live up to his legacy. Until Valhalla my friend.

John ole friend. I only recently knew of your passing. We had some great times while growing up in high school driving the square in your lowed Ford. Join the US NAVY together, but I had to wait several months before I could leave. I ended up on the Coral Sea. See you on the other Side. Rest in Peace.
