Tina Elaine Coker-Monroe

Tina Elaine Coker-Monroe, 67, passed away peacefully surrounded by family and friends, at LMH Health in Lawrence on July 1, 2023.

She was born May 2, 1956, in Oakland, CA, the third of nine children, to Harry and Lois Charlene (Robinson) Coker Sr. both of whom preceded her in death.

Before retiring and moving from California to Kansas, Tina was Director of the Mental Health Advocates Program for Alameda County in Oakland. She had a long-time love of advocating for people who had difficulties in helping themselves due to lack of knowledge about resources or who were impeded by mental or physical challenges.

She married Gillis Michael Monroe on March 6, 2014, in Norwalk, CA.  He survives of the home. Others left to cherish her memory are siblings, Linda (Maurice) Tiggs, Joyce Coker (Moussa Kaba), Donald Coker, Harry Coker Jr., Leslie Aubert, Lori Coker, Anthony (Michelle) Coker, Jason (Hideko) Coker, and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends. Tina will be missed by mother-in-law, Anita M. Monroe, stepdaughters, Mechelle Monroe and Christian Monroe, close friends and confidants Anna Monroe, Karen Monroe, and Dianne Monroe, and grandson Maxwell Alexander Taylor.

Tina’s pet, Zeke, will remind us what carries us through these times of loss. His name is Ezekiel- The Strength of God.

A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, July 15, 2023, 1:00 pm, at Hamilton Chapel in Parsons with Calvert Green officiating.

The family suggests memorials in Tina’s name to the American Cancer Society and may be sent in care of Warren-McElwain Mortuary, 120 W. 13th Street, Lawrence, KS 66044.

For her husband, family, and friends, take time to note that our friend on this earth has only transitioned to a journey that we must all make. Okay, we get…to which I would respond, ‘do you?’. Tina lived her life with the complete and total knowledge she was simply edifying his commandment to his vested servants, and yes this young lady was so vested in THE FATHER and his word. While we all share the despondency of this family, please internalize the fact, Tina has now been reunited with her family and now we are charged with joining her. She is celebrating, we are shedding tears, to me that implies we are still learning. Tina is celebrating and we will celebrate the essence of her life and how she lived out HIS promises later this month. I fervently ask THE FATHER to lean closer than ever to her husband, her family, and friends. Tina is celebrating and we are charged to become knowledgeable of what she knew that was absent to those that remain. Please note, there is reason for announcing her ‘homecoming celebration’, and my prayer is that clarity of that instruction comes to us all sooner than later. I’ll miss my friend, but I also laud her her earthly journey.

Ms. Tina volunteered in my Head Start classroom. She had a beautiful soul and adored the children, just as much as they adored her. She always had a smile on her face and brought joy to the classroom. Ms. Tina always made it a point to ask us teachers how we were doing and took an interest in our life. She was a treasure to know and work with. I am so sorry for your loss.
    -Ms. Renee
