Dixie Ann Olson was born February 28, 1928, in Wichita, KS to Guy S. and Dixie (Hicklin) Bruce.
She went to be with her Lord on Monday, December 26, 2022, at the age of 94, in Lawrence, Kansas. She was preceded in death by her husband of 53 years, Oscar Adolph “Bud” Olson on November 27, 2019. She was also preceded in death by her brother, Norman Bruce of St. Louis. Survivors include her daughter, Susan Johnson Conley (Tom) of Kansas City; her son, Martin Johnson (Jana) of Lawrence; son, Lynn Olson (Karen) of Lawrence; daughter Kathy Olson Nichols (Nick) of Hardyville, Kentucky; along with numerous grand and great grandchildren.
Dixie was very active in the community as a member of Plymouth Congregational Church, Lawrence Garden Club, Lawrence and Alvamar Country Clubs, PEO Sisterhood Chapter FZ, New Generation Society, and the Kansas City Young Matrons. She enjoyed playing bridge with the gals and had a flair for entertaining. An avid traveler, Dixie looked forward to summer fishing trips to Canada, along with visiting other exciting destinations. Her years as Docent for the Spencer Museum of Art, University of Kansas were a great source of joy and fulfillment. Her KU Jayhawks were certainly a passion and she rarely missed a game, always there to cheer them on.
Dixie will continue to live on in the hearts of her loves ones.
Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, January 4, 2023, at Warren-McElwain Mortuary in Lawrence. Burial to follow at Chapel Hill Cemetery in Kansas City, Kansas.
The family welcomes memorial contributions in her name to Plymouth Congregational Church and may be sent in care of the Warren-McElwain Mortuary 120 W. 13th St. Lawrence, KS 66044.
I am so sorry for your loss. For years I sat next to your folks at KU basketball games and found them to be lovely, lovely people. I’m grateful that I had the opportunity to make their acquaintances.
So sorry for the family’s loss. She was a wonderful person always.
I enjoyed knowing Dixie in the Meadowlark Garden Club. She was a gracious hostess and had our ladies’ group to her beautiful home many times. She contributed to her community in so many ways and will be missed by all who knew her.

Dixie was one of my mother’s best friends. She was always so kind and loving to all of us. I remember how welcoming she was and doing wonderful gatherings for all of of family. She hosted my parent’s 25th anniversary party, and several wonderful gatherings before the ISU/KU games when our son played football for ISU. She was a member of the “busy bee” group of Mom’s/grandma’s that did fun gifts for their kids/grandkids. She will be so missed. She is the the last of busy bess to have passed away.
