Jose Antonio Hernandez

With deep sorrow and much love, we announce the passing of our beloved father, Jose Antonio Hernandez, 66. Jose passed away after a courageous battle with Covid-19 on Monday, February 28, 2022, at Lawrence Memorial Hospital in Lawrence, KS. Jose had his three children at his side during his final moments.

Jose was born July 9, 1955, in El Paso, TX to Jose and Amelia (Flores) Hernandez. Jose grew up in a large family; he had four brothers and three sisters. Jose was commonly known as “Tony” or “Joe”. He lived in El Paso until his early school years when the Hernandez family moved to Tucson, Arizona, the place he called home for the next 35+ years of his life. It was in Tucson where he became a father and raised his two daughters, he then moved to Baldwin City, KS a couple of years after his only son was born. Once in Kansas, Tony began a 20+ year career with Amarr Garage Doors, forging great relationships with his coworkers who loved and adored him.

Tony loved the simple things in life; hanging out with family or friends with his favorite beer, Dos XX, fishing with his son, watching old westerns or King Kong movies, playing card games and board games, and watching his Kansas City Chiefs play football. From the time he was a small child, Tony had a mischievous sense of humor and loved making people laugh. He was known for his silly side and did the best depiction of “The Lollipop Guild” from “The Wizard of Oz.” Known for his quick wit, enthusiastic demeanor and fighting spirit, Tony was not one who would back down from a challenge.

Tony is survived by his children, Christina (David Guerrero) Hernandez, Valerie (Oswaldo) Santiago, and Robert Hernandez; his siblings, Melita Gutierrez, Art (Chickie) Hernandez, Charlie (Diane) Hernandez, Julie (Jerry) Orta, and Manuel Hernandez; his four grandchildren, Araceli, Jocelyn, David and Maribel, and his only great grandchild, Julian Rey, many nieces, nephews, friends, and family.

Tony was preceded in death by his parents, Jose & Amelia Hernandez, his brother, Albert Hernandez, and his sister, Veronica Flores.

A Celebration of Life will be held in Tony’s honor on Saturday, April 2, 2022, from 3pm to 6pm at The Fraternal Order of Eagles Tucson, 1530 N Stone Ave, Tucson, AZ.

The family wishes to send a special thank you to the staff at Lawrence Memorial Hospital for the incredible care and compassion they provided in Tony’s final days.
