Marc M. Mitchell passed away on March 31, 2017 in Lawrence, Kansas. He was born in Garden City, Kansas on June 30, 1952 and was the only son of Lewis and Donis Mitchell of Scott City, Kansas.
Marc attended Scott Community High School and graduated in 1970. He enrolled at the University of Kansas later that year and joined the Delta Chi fraternity, where he served as Rush Chairman his sophomore year. Marc graduated from KU with a degree in business administration and joined GTE in their management training program. He eventually settled in Durham, North Carolina. Marc left GTE and formed his own consulting company and spent the next several years providing financial advice to small and start-up companies.
Around 2004 Marc was diagnosed with inclusion body myositis, an autoimmune disease that began weakening his muscles and eventually confined him to a wheelchair. Marc was smart, intellectually curious, and looked at things from many perspectives. He loved a lively discussion, and through social media he connected with a wide network of friends and family, sharing his knowledge, humor, compassion and love with all. Marc never complained and his disease did not define him.
Marc loved the University of Kansas and Jayhawk basketball. He followed news of the team, kept us updated on the newest recruit and remembered all the details of every season. March Madness will not be the same without Marc.
Marc was preceded in death by his father, Lewis Mitchell. Marc is survived by his mother, Donis Mitchell, of Providence, Rhode Island and Scott City, Kansas; by his sisters, Meredith Mitchell, Melanie Mitchell Key (Stephen Key), and Marci Mitchell Duys (John Duys); beloved niece Catie Duys; former wife Marilyn Metzler; many aunts, uncles, and cousins; and his dear friend Amy Kessler.
Marc will be cremated and a remembrance gathering will be held in Lawrence on Wednesday, April 5, 2017, from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at Warren-McElwain Mortuary. A memorial service will be held at a later date in Scott City.
Memorial contributions may be made to Midland Care Connection www.midlandcareconnection.org which provided Marc’s wonderful caregivers and other services, or to The Myositis Foundation, in care of Warren-McElwain Mortuary, 120 W. 13th Street, Lawrence, KS 66044-3402.
Dear Donis, Meredith, Melanie and Marcia I am so deeply sorry for Marc’s passing. I so enjoyed reconnecting with Matc on Facebook. He had such insight on so many issues. He was a joy to communicate with. Although it has been so many many years since I have seen him I remeber visiting you all in Scott and even spending a weekend or two there in our younger years. What a wonderful tribute to Marc that was written. I am sending my love to all of you and you are in my thoughts. I remember one of Marc’s last posts after the Jayhawks lost ,in the Elite Eight. In true Marc fashion he was looking ahead to next years Jayhawk team. We all lost a glass half full, positive, delightful and caring man. May he look down on all of you with his Dad.
