Funeral service for Amanda Sue Kapfer, 43, Lawrence will be held at 1:00 p.m. Saturday, October 15, 2016 at First United Methodist Church, 946 Vermont St., downtown Lawrence. She passed away Saturday, October 8, 2016 at Lawrence Memorial Hospital.
Amanda was born December 3, 1972 in Callaway, NE the daughter of Marvin Leonard and Rebecca Sue (Menzies) Nance.
She was a Language Arts and ESL teacher for Topeka Middle School District 501.
She married Matthew Reed Kapfer September 21, 1997 in Lawrence. He survives of the home.
Other survivors include her daughter, Eva Frances Plum Kapfer; four sons, Owen Matthew Kapfer, Oliver George Kapfer, Marvin Lewis Kapfer, Everett Moses Kapfer; parents, Marvin and Rebecca Nance, Emporia; mother and father-in-law, Susan D. and George L. Kapfer, Lawrence; sister, Rachel Anne (Doug) Jones, Cottonwood Falls, KS, brother, Nathan Ward Nance, Florence, AZ; paternal grandfather, Robert Ward Nance, Winona, MN. She was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Celia Menzies Kapfer on March 30, 1998.
The family will greet friends from 7 – 9 p.m. Friday, October 14th at Warren-McElwain Mortuary in Lawrence.
Amanda never met a stranger so anyone and everyone is welcome.
Memorials may be made in her name to the Amanda Sue Kapfer Children’s Education Fund and may be sent in care of the Warren-McElwain Mortuary.
Your mom was a wonderful person and teacher. She will be missed. She loved to play soccer with the kids. Please accept my thoughts and prayers

Amanda started a clothing bank at our school specifically for dress-up events because she cared so much about all children having an opportunity to feel special and get to experience great things. She is very loved and will be missed.
I met Amanda at ESU and had so many great times with her! She was warm, caring and a truly genuine person. I know there are no words, but my thoughts and prayers are with Amanda and her entire family.
When we first moved to Arizona we met the Kapfer family and became fast friends – our boys played ball together. I’m so sorry to learn of this. Amanda gave me The Hunger Games Trilogy books for my 40th birthday and she was right – I loved them!! You will ever be in my favor dear friend. Rest In Peace. I feel lucky to have known you and to have been touched by you.
Amanda taught me how to coach little kid teams and play Futsal. Her spirit was powerful and bright – she gave light to so many of us! Friends, I’m so sorry she’s gone.
I knew Amanda from our children’s time at Hillcrest Elementary School. She was and still is an example of cheer, service, kindness and an amazing zest for life. Prayers for your family.

We are saddened to learn of your loss! Loretta had Amanda in her first grade class and remembers her as such a loving and caring person at that time. We are so sorry and we are sure she will be missed by family and friends! We send our prayers for comfort to the family.

I went to high school and college with Amanda. I haven’t seen her in years. We reconnected at on FB a few years ago. She had such a dynamic presence. I can not believe a world exists without her in it. She was so young and vibrant and lovely. My deepest condolences to her children, to Matt, to everyone who loved her.
This is the woman that creeps silently along the edges of your life…don’t get me wrong! She is loud and proud and out in front and smiling and generous and never misses an opportunity to say “that’s racist; that’s sexual assault; that’s bullshit!” We met so many times in so many different settings from playing soccer together to raising kids together. And then their were times when we never saw each other but a red head would cruise by and say “her Beth” and it would bet kid and there she’d be creeping along the edges of my life…somehow always present when she wasn’t even there! And j think that’s how it will be now too…Amanda, creeping along the edges of my life! Reminding me to stand up, when, as a white woman, I don’t have to. Reminding me to call out sexual assault when it’s easiar not to. Reminding to play and love and raise children with abandon! Remi ding me she is still here, even when I can’t see her!
