Funeral services for William L. (Bill) Hogle, 89, Lawrence, will be held at 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, May 5, 2009 at Plymouth Congregational Church in Lawrence, KS. Graveside services will be 1:00 p.m. at Burlingame Cemetery, Burlingame, Kansas. He died May 1, 2009 at Brandon Woods Retirement Community.
He was born February 24, 1920 at Burlingame, Kansas, the son of Langdon and Elsie (McRae) Hogle. He was a graduate of the University of Kansas and of the University of California, and earned the designation of Chartered Life Underwriter from the American College, Brynmawr, Pennsylvania. During World War II he served for four years in the U.S. Army Air Corps in the South Pacific theater of operations.
He was married to Gertrude Toll, March 2, 1946, at Ripon, Wisconsin. They had resided in Berkley, California; Topeka, Burlingame, and, since 1963, resided in Lawrence.
After an initial career in retail merchandising he entered the insurance business in Lawrence, and, after 30 years as an agent with State Farm Insurance Companies, retired on December 31, 1992.
A former deacon and past moderator of Plymouth Congregational Church, he was also an active member of the Lawrence Chamber of Commerce. He had served on the Board of Directors of the Lawrence United Way, the Kansas Association of Life Underwriters, the Northeast Kansas Chapter of Chartered Life Underwriters, and was twice president of the Lawrence Association of Life Underwriters.
He is survived by his wife, Gertrude, of the home; by two sons, Bruce Hogle of Overland Park, KS and Gregory Hogle of Denver, CO; two daughters, Teresa Ronsse of Watsonville, CA , Susan Stahl of Lawrence, KS and by 5 grandchildren.
Memorials may be made to the Douglas County Visiting Nurses and Hospice or to the Plymouth Congregational Church and may be sent in care of the Warren-McElwain Mortuary.
