Services for Vincent Henry “Bill” Vermooten, 82, of Lawrence, Kansas, and previously of Dallas-Fort Worth, Texas, will be held at a later date. He passed away on January 3, 2021, at Lawrence Memorial Hospital.
Bill was born on February 9, 1938, in Johannesburg, South Africa, the son of Vincent and Esther DeBerdt (Robins) Vermooten.
He graduated from Highland Park High School in Dallas in 1956, and served six months active duty and two years reserve in the United States Army. He graduated from Dartmouth College in 1961 and from the SMU School of Law in 1965. His law career was primarily in real estate and title insurance, and oil and gas.
A lifelong Anglican, Bill was an avid reader and read for KU Audio-Reader in Lawrence. He also enjoyed training in martial arts. In 2007, he won gold for forms in his division at the American Taekwondo Association World Championships. He achieved the rank of Third Degree Black Belt.
He married Virginia “Ginger” Koger on February 19, 1972, in Lakewood, Colorado. She survives of the home.
Other survivors include his daughter, Jessica R Vermooten; his son, David G Vermooten; daughter-in-law, Jocilyn Oyler; granddaughters, Isabella and Annika Vermooten; and Priscilla and Michael Baldwin, his sister and brother-in-law.
Memorial contributions may be made in his name to KU Audio-Reader, and may be sent in care of Warren-McElwain Mortuary, 120 W. 13th Street, Lawrence, KS 66044.

I am indeed sad to learn of Mr. Vermooten’s passing. The kids and I have fond memories of his quiet, steady presence at the school during our martial arts training/competition years. He was a fine man.
