Venita Lorian Miskimen

Funeral services for Venita Lorain Miskimen, 87, Lawrence will be held at 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, November 3, 2015 at Warren-McElwain Mortuary. Venita passed away Friday, October 30, 2015 at Lawrence Memorial Hospital.

Venita was born July 23, 1928 in Meriden, KS, the daughter of William and Blanche (Krumrey) Plaisted.

She graduated from Liberty Memorial High School

Venita started working at Lawrence Memorial Hospital when she was 14 years old washing dishes and retired in 1992 from Lawrence Memorial Hospital after 50 years of service as Dietitian Supervisor. While working at the hospital she met Howard Miskimen, whom delivered produce to the hospital. While dating she and Howard enjoyed roller skating, Howard was an expert skater. She later married Howard H. Miskimen April 28, 1948 in Lawrence and received a new pair of roller skates as a wedding gift for her uncle Walt.

She was a member of the First United Methodist Church, a member of Retirees group at Lawrence Memorial Hospital. She was a collector of antique dishes especially china bowls, she loved to read and was an avid KU Basketball Fan and had courtside seats for 30 years; she enjoyed traveling and went on an Alaskan Cruise; she also enjoyed making homemade sweets and was known for her cookies and fried chicken on Sunday gatherings. But most of all she loved visits with family and friends and keeping life sweet and simple. We will all dearly miss our “Cookie Lady” and “Aunt V”.

Survivors include many nieces and nephews and great nieces and great nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Howard in 2002 and her two sisters, Juanita Arrington and Alta Mae Johnson.

The family will greet friends from 6 – 8 p.m. on Monday, November 2, 2015 at the mortuary.

Memorial contributions may be made in her name to the First United Methodist Church and may be sent in care of Warren-McElwain Mortuary.

The family would like to say a special “Thank You” to Brandon Woods for their care and bus trip outings which Venita so enjoyed.
