Therese Marie (Terry) Platz

Therese Marie (Terry) Platz, 82, Lawrence, passed away August 17, 2021, after a recent, unexpected, aggressive cancer diagnosis.

Terry was born on November 16, 1938, in Chicago, Illinois and was the daughter of Leon V. and Gertrude M. Michal. She spent most of her childhood in Lincoln, NE, graduated from Cathedral High School class of 1956 and attended the University of Nebraska. In 1961, she married H. William “Bill” Platz and moved to Lawrence, KS where she lived the rest of her life. She had many talents and found real estate the perfect way to utilize them best. For over 45 years, she enjoyed staging houses, so they looked their best and loved helping people find the perfect home for their family. Although often one of the tops in sales, she always said, “It has been more important to me to make a friend than a sale, and that is very rewarding to me.” That outlook led her to many friendships with co-workers and clients alike.

Words cannot adequately describe someone so special. She had a heart of gold. Her kindness, generosity and loving nature go unmatched. She made a very happy home where anyone was welcome to pull up a chair and join in the fun. Terry loved her family, her beautiful garden, decorating for the holidays, family traditions, cooking/baking, planning parties, her cat Willie and making others happy.

Family was of utmost importance to Terry. She is survived by her daughter, Shelly Platz, son Doug Platz (Cory Murphy), son Jon Platz, daughter-in-law Robyn Adams Platz and grandchildren Evan Grace (14), Lilah Jane (13) and Eli James (12) Platz. She was proceeded in death by her parents, husband Bill, son Jeff and her brother Paul. She gave us all unconditional love and endless joy. We will cherish the memories we had together.

A small, private memorial service for family will be held in September on her wedding anniversary.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in her name to the American Cancer Society and sent in care of Warren-McElwain Mortuary, 120 W 13th Street, Lawrence, KS 66044. We also suggest that you spread her beauty and kindness by planting flowers for all to enjoy or adopting a family to give them a “magical” Christmas as she did for so many throughout her lifetime.

    Dear Shelly and siblings,
We first met Terry when she offered to care for our twins when we were in a day care crunch. I remember her sage advice on bringing up twins and enjoyed her sharing of thoughts and philosophies. That was back in 1986. I’ve only run into your mom off and on throughout the years since then, but each time we did meet, she remembered me and our twins and always asked about them.
Terry was a warm, caring and thoughtful person and I’m am very happy that our paths crossed. Our thoughts and prayers are with you as you navigate the seas of grief and remembrance. One can truly never be prepared for the loss of a parent.
