Sarah Jane Borden

Memorial services for Sarah Jane Borden, 77, Berryton, KS, will be held at 5:00 p.m. Thursday, July 20, 2023 at Warren-McElwain Mortuary in Lawrence.  Sarah passed away on Saturday, July 8th, 2023, at her home.

She was born on March 5, 1946, in Chicago, Illinois, the daughter of Fredrick and Louise (Hamilton) Millward.

She was a Cosmetologist for a number of years.  Sarah loved spending time with family and the grandkids were her priority.  She enjoyed crafts and had an artistic eye.

She married William Edward Borden, Sr. on April 29, 1966, in Warrensburg, Missouri.   He preceded her in death.

Survivors include her son, Andrew (Basha) Borden, stepchildren, Melody (Fred) Hoeppner, Victor (Cathy) Borden, Mone Borden, sister, Judy (Tom) Clisham and grandchildren, Matthew, Tim, Luke, Aaron, and Sabra Hoeppner, Adam Borden, Susannah Hurless, Elizabeth Brennan, and Priscilla Borden, Miles Borden, William and Renner Borden. And five great grandchildren, Fred and Gracelyn Hoeppner, Alivia Hoeppner, Beau and Caleb Brennan

She was preceded in death by her parents, her children, William Borden, Jr. and Brandy Borden, a grandchild Miles Borden, brother Fredrick Millward, sisters, Ellen Boylan and Johanne Loar.

38 years ago on December 20th, 1985, Sarah’s family not including her were in a head on collision with a drunk driver. The only survivor is her son Andrew. She lost her husband Bill, oldest child William and her daughter, Brandy. We find great comfort that when she left this world, she was reunited with those that departed so long ago. Not that she didn’t love us that were still here but how glorious that reunion must have been!

In lieu of flowers, send memorials in Sarah’s name to Lupus Research Alliance and may be sent in care of Warren-McElwain Mortuary, 120 W. 13th Street, Lawrence, KS 66044.

Time spent with Grandma was always fun and memorable. A favorite memory is jet skiing in the Caribbean together. We rented a jetski and spent the majority of the time soaring over waves, rather than leisurely cruising. Whistles from the beach indicated a driver was getting too rambunctious behind the wheel. Grandma Sarah was driving the jet ski. As fast as she could. I was on the back of the jet ski, holding my breath and the back of her life jacket with white knuckles. She was fun and daring. I will miss her kindness, sense of humor and her brave spirit. Her life was not easy, but she approached challenges with perseverance and her faith in the Lord. I look forward to seeing her again one day with Jesus.

Sarah was my sister Vivian’s best friend in High School. Sarah stayed in touch even after the tragic loss of her family. She was in touch with me thru the years after my sister Vivian passed away. Sarah was a special person so funny and spunky. We will always cherish our memories of Sarah.
    My condolences to the family.
